Payload Studios Lays Off 25 Percent Of Staff

As a gamer with years of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of empathy for those affected by the recent layoffs at Payload Studios. The gaming industry is notorious for its highs and lows, and it’s heartbreaking to see talented individuals losing their jobs due to market conditions.

As a gaming enthusiast, I just learned that TerraTech’s creator, Payload Studios, had to let go of a quarter of their team this past week. The news was shared by none other than the studio’s founder and CEO, Russ Clarke, on LinkedIn.

He acknowledged that despite our best efforts, we’ve made mistakes over the past few years. He also pointed out that the games market has been incredibly challenging lately and seems to be getting tougher. As a small independent company, we don’t have any special protection against these difficulties; our only defense is consistently delivering exceptional work, which, as he noted, is easier said than done.

From what Clarke stated, it means that about a quarter of the team will be dismissed without specifying an exact number. Assuming Rocket Reach’s data is correct and there are currently 48 employees in the company, it would mean that at least 12 individuals could potentially lose their jobs based on this announcement.

“The project will persevere and recover from this setback; I’m confident of that, although the path ahead remains tough for some time. Rest assured, TerraTech and TerraTech Worlds will continue to grow without disruption. We extend our gratitude to our exceptional community for their unwavering support, and we wish the very best to our valued colleagues who have been part of this incredible adventure, but must now bid farewell.”

In 2024, at least 11,600 people have been made unemployed in the gaming industry due to layoffs at Payload Studios.
