PC Gaming Has Been Outperforming Console For Years – And It’s Getting Stronger

A lengthy study titled “The State of the Games Industry” by Epyllion has just been released, spanning over 200 pages. This comprehensive review delves deep into various aspects such as consumer expenditure and hardware achievements, offering valuable perspectives on the gaming world over the past ten years or so.

Over the past ten years or so, it’s clear that PC gaming has significantly outperformed console platforms in terms of power. This superiority is evident in the greater volume of content creation and financial returns it generates.

PC Power

In Epyllion’s report (tracked down by FictionHorizon), the cold, hard facts are made clear.

Since 2011, PC gaming content has outperformed console revenue in the living room by over 65%, generating approximately twice as much as the combined console spend – equating to an impressive $30 billion.

Those numbers exclude hardware and accessories.

Additionally, the findings indicated that mobile gaming surpasses desktop (PC) and traditional console gaming in terms of revenue generation, making it the top earner within the video game industry.

Despite a significant $18 billion rise in gaming console platform expenditure in 2024 as compared to 2011, the spending on PC platforms remains higher, with a growth of 75%. In other words, even though console spending saw a considerable boost, PC content spending still outstripped it.

But why is PC becoming increasingly popular and much more profitable?

Epyllion suggested it boils down to a few core reasons:

  • PC platforms have a much larger library of games and ‘near-full backwards compatibility’
  • On a PC, you can multi-task (stream, communicate, alt+tab, multiple monitors)
  • Lower entry price point than consoles
  • Higher top-end performance
  • Better for esports and competitive gaming
  • Able to play more early-access games
  • More annual game releases
  • Console ‘exclusives’ are now finding their way to PC

It’s clear to observe that certain funds originate from specific sources, such as the ‘skin market’ of Counter-Strike, which first appeared in 2013, has grown to approximately $5 billion and is solely connected with PC gaming.

This console sales during the current generation have experienced a slight drop compared to past periods, whereas PC gaming has persistently exhibited growth. The surge of content creation, streaming, and User-Generated Content (UGC) has fueled an increasing desire for people to engage on PC platforms. Advances in technology are also making high-performance, affordable PC hardware more accessible.
