PC Motherboard Market Has Seemingly Recovered

As a long-time PC enthusiast and builder, I can’t help but feel elated by the latest news coming from the motherboard market. After enduring the frustrating shortages of 2021 and 2022, it seems that we are finally turning a corner. The projected 38.8 million unit sales in 2024 by the big four motherboard manufacturers – ASUS, ASRock, Gigabyte, and MSI – is not only a significant increase from the previous year but also a testament to the resilience of this industry.

It appears that the PC motherboard market has bounced back three and a half years after experiencing scarcities in 2021 and 2022.

Based on DigiTimes’ report, the major motherboard manufacturers, including ASUS, ASRock, Gigabyte, and MSI from Taiwan, are projected to sell approximately 38.8 million units in 2024. This represents a 5% growth from the 36.8 million units sold in 2023, and an impressive 25% rise compared to the 30.9 million units shipped in 2022.

Although the device shipments in 2023 didn’t reach the record-breaking 42.7 million from 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic was at its height, leading to a surge in demand for consumer goods, the improvement from the previous year is still noteworthy and a triumph for manufacturers. Furthermore, there has been a substantial year-over-year increase of 32% in GPU sales by Q4 2023.

The anticipated rises in shipments are projected to persist with AMD and Intel readying to unveil their upcoming next-generation Central Processing Units (CPUs). AMD is slated to debut its new Ryzen 9000 series CPUs towards the end of this month. In contrast, Intel plans to release its Arrow Lake-S processors in the fall season.
