Spoilers for The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 2

Summary

  • Fans struggle with emotions after a heartbreaking scene in Season 2 of The Last of Us
  • Pedro Pascal recalls nightmares from his gruesome death scene in Game of Thrones as Oberyn
  • The Last of Us Season 2 will focus on Ellie’s revenge in a brutal and dark narrative.

Fans of “The Last of Us” are still processing their emotions following the latest episode of Season 2, and it’s understandable why. The second episode, titled ‘Through the Valley’, was a rollercoaster ride of heartbreak, fear, and the lingering sadness of unspoken moments between Joel and Ellie. Despite being one of the most anticipated episodes of the season, viewers were unprepared for what they would encounter, as the scene was particularly grueling for Joel’s character. A scene from another HBO series left Pedro Pascal haunted by nightmares due to its graphic portrayal of a character’s death.

Besides starring as the resilient survivor Joel in HBO’s post-apocalyptic show “The Last of Us,” a bounty hunter in “Star Wars” live-action series “The Mandalorian,” and Agent Javier Peña in Netflix’s “Narcos,” Pedro Pascal has also portrayed the flamboyant yet charismatic Prince Oberyn Martell, or the Red Viper of Dorne, in HBO’s “Game of Thrones.” This role allowed him to display his remarkable acting skills to a global audience. However, the brutal combat scene between Oberyn and The Mountain that ended in Oberyn’s memorable and gory death is still etched in Pedro’s memory, as it continues to haunt fans of the popular series to this day.

Pedro Pascal Had Nightmares From His Brutal Death in Game of Thrones

During an interview with ComicBook at the Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, Pedro Pascal opened up about the lingering effects of his character’s grisly fate in Game of Thrones. Specifically, he mentioned that playing Prince Oberyn Martell and witnessing his gruesome demise at the hands of The Mountain left him with “disturbing dreams.” For those who watched season 4, episode 8, titled “The Mountain and the Viper,” the harrowing scene where Oberyn’s eyes are gouged out and his skull crushed by Ser Gregor Clegane is an image seared into memory. “I had nightmares too,” Pascal admitted. Being a fan of the series and well-versed in its storylines, he was aware of what was coming and felt better prepared for the intense emotions that would ensue. “It won’t leave me scarred like it will others,” he said, expressing a sense of self-preservation. “I had a strange appreciation for being spared from something as harrowing as that.

It’s amusing to recall my reaction when I first read this. As an avid fan of the series, the script seemed almost tangible, as if I were watching each episode unfold before me. When I reached that particular [scene] and realized it was taking place, I couldn’t help but feel relieved that there was a build-up leading to this moment.

In response to being questioned about any other on-screen event in his acting career that could compare to the distress his “Game of Thrones” character endured, particularly the Red Viper’s death, Pascal, before episode 2 of “The Last of Us season 2” had been aired, expressed uncertainty and suggested that Joel’s demise might surpass it. Reflecting on his statement, it appears as if the actor may have subtly hinted at the possibility that Joel’s death could be more harrowing than Oberyn’s. Although both deaths were shocking to watch, each occurred at the hands of another, catching their respective characters off guard, either through overconfidence or a false sense of security.

The second season of “The Last of Us” will shift its focus to Ellie’s quest for vengeance, with the theme of recurring violence flowing consistently throughout the plot. While the specifics of how the story unfolds in HBO’s version compared to the video game sequel remain uncertain, fans can expect a gritty and somber narrative as intense as the original Naughty Dog game.

The Last of Us Season 2 streams on Max, with new episodes dropping every Sunday.
