The Winter Frost Event in Heartopia added lots of fun new features, relaxing activities, and unique animals. Players were encouraged to take their time and really explore the game world, discovering magical creatures like Frostspore Fishes, Birds, and Butterflies throughout the season.
Penguins are a brand-new addition to this event! These cute, seasonal animals each have their own unique story, favorite foods, and ways to become friends. This guide will show you how to unlock Penguins, locate the Penguin Trough, and build strong friendships with them in Heartopia.
How to Unlock Penguins in Heartopia
You can unlock penguins by starting a quest with Naughty during the fourth week of the Winter Frost Event. The quest begins when Naughty asks you to look into something strange happening near the Onsen. You’ll find a “Strange Bird Feather” on the sand near the Onsen while investigating, and this feather kicks off the penguin discovery storyline.
Once you’ve found the Strange Bird Feather, bring it to Bailey J. When you talk to them, choose the dialogue option about the feather. Bailey J will then look at it and determine that it likely came from a penguin.
Your next goal is to talk to Annie. When you find her, select the option about penguins. This will progress the Major Discovery quest and introduce you to Harry, who is also working on a significant discovery.
After talking to Harry, Annie figures out that real penguins are coming to Heartopia because of a fake penguin that showed up during a past winter event. Once you finish the conversation with Annie, you’ll unlock penguins, and they’ll start appearing in Heartopia.
Where to Find Penguin Trough in Heartopia
Penguins are only available during the Winter Frost Event in Heartopia. Once Week Four of the event starts in your area, you can find them in Winter Utopia, near Onsen Mountain. They like cold weather and are most often seen when it’s snowing or raining.
The Penguin Trough is located on the path to the Concert Portal in Heartopia, a popular area for players during events. It’s situated between the igloo and the concert venue entrance. Because it looks like part of the snowy landscape, it’s easy to run right past it!
During the Winter Frost Event, the in-game phone’s weather forecast will show rain, but it will actually be considered snow for event purposes.
How to Build Friendship with Penguins
In Heartopia, befriending penguins is mainly about giving them food at the Penguin Trough. You can use the trough to offer various items, and while penguins will respond to anything you give them, they like fish the best.
Want to quickly become friends with your Penguins and skip the guesswork of finding the right food? Try feeding them seafood! They especially love Sardines, Common Prawn, and False Scad. Using these foods regularly will increase your friendship level much faster than offering random items.
We haven’t confirmed this yet, but you might receive gifts from Penguins as you become closer to them.
Fortunately, getting the fish you need is simple in Heartopia. Unlike many other fish that require higher fishing levels, you can catch Sardines and Common Prawn right away at level 1 – you just need to unlock the Fishing hobby first! You’ll need to reach Fishing Hobby level 2 to catch False Scad.
Penguins are only available for a short time during the Winter Frost Event, so it’s best to spend time with them while you can. They only stay on the island for under a month, so checking the trough each day will help you become friends with them before the event is over.

I’ve been working on my Fishing Hobby, and it’s actually pretty easy to level up! I quickly got to level 2 just by catching the beginner fish. Once the game let me upgrade, all I had to do was go to the Hobbies menu, pick Fishing, and use those Hobby Upgrade Tickets to boost it up a level. Super simple!
Penguins will eventually leave Heartopia, so make sure to unlock them and become friends while you can! It’s a fun way to enjoy one of Winter Frost’s cutest features before they’re gone.
