Perfect Dark could have been saved, according to a new report.
Earlier this July, unexpectedly, the reboot project, which Crystal Dynamics, The Initiative, and Xbox were working on, was cancelled. This decision came after a gameplay trailer for the project that had received positive feedback, leaving many fans feeling let down. Additionally, recent layoffs at Rare seem to suggest that any hopes of seeing the classic shooter revived are now unlikely. Regretfully, it appears the game’s release is no longer a possibility.
Take-Two Could’ve Released Perfect Dark, But Declined
As a dedicated gamer, I heard some disappointing news last week. It turns out Crystal Dynamics had to let go of some team members because they couldn’t finalize a deal with a new publisher for Perfect Dark. The folks at Embracer, who own Crystal Dynamics, were reportedly really close to sealing a deal with Take-Two Interactive. If it had happened, Take-Two would’ve picked up the game from Xbox and brought it to completion. Unfortunately, the negotiations hit a snag due to the complexities surrounding Perfect Dark’s ownership, but the specifics of why things fell apart remain unclear.
Alongside the termination of Perfect Dark, the studio responsible, The Initiative, has ceased operations. Simultaneously, reports reveal that leaders from the studio and Crystal Dynamics have been in talks with publishers for the past two months. Although discussions took place with multiple parties, Take-Two was reportedly the publisher who progressed furthest in these negotiations.
Although it appears that a return for Perfect Dark might seem improbable at this point, there’s still a possibility it could resurface. Following the closure of Tango Gameworks by Xbox after their success with Hi-Fi Rush, Krafton acquired them, allowing them to work on their intellectual properties once more. It remains uncertain if The Initiative shares the same fate, but ultimately, it hinges on the IP of Perfect Dark and whether the rights can be obtained for a potential revival.
