Games can be played in segments of thirty minutes each. However, some games don’t work well when players are short on time. For instance, you might be able to fit in a game or two of Call of Duty multiplayer, but if a match runs long, you may have to stop it prematurely, which could negatively affect your standing.
Games like Fallout 3 offer excellent save systems in expansive, open worlds. However, playing for around thirty minutes can become disorienting, as players might lose track of their goals. Other games are better suited for shorter, more frequent play sessions, and this applies to many different game types.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Check Up On Your Homestead
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is best enjoyed in small sessions, otherwise it can become repetitive, similar to many relaxing simulation games. Once you’ve set up your home, you’re free to develop your island, doing things like breaking rocks and planting apple trees. It takes roughly two hours to get comfortable with the game, but then you’ll likely find yourself logging in daily, playing for around thirty minutes, and finishing up all your daily goals.
Hades
Escape The Underworld
Hades is often considered the definitive roguelike, and players are absolutely loving it. As with most games of this type, it takes a little time to get used to how the combat flows. A single attempt, or “run,” usually lasts between ten and thirty minutes – it never takes much longer – and it’s possible to even “beat” Hades within that timeframe. However, there’s a lot more to discover in the game, and it’s incredibly satisfying because dying doesn’t feel like a setback. It’s one of the most rewarding roguelikes available.
Super Mario World
A Classic Returns
Super Mario World is still considered a fantastic game since its release on the SNES in 1991. Now, players can enjoy this classic title while traveling thanks to the online SNES library available on the Switch and Switch 2.
Levels are quick to finish-often within a few minutes-and each one introduces fresh challenges and surprises, like leaping dolphins or Mario being pursued by enormous Bullet Bills. Players can easily complete several levels whenever they have a little free time-whether it’s thirty minutes or just fifteen-a common trait among many 2D Mario games.
Mario Kart World
A Race A Day, Keeps Bowser Away
Those who enjoy Switch 2 should definitely check out Mario Kart World when they’re craving some fast-paced action. You can finish an entire four-course circuit in Mario Kart World in about thirty minutes when playing offline. If you’re feeling ambitious, you can also race online or try out different game modes to test your skills. The game also lets you explore and collect items if you want, but it’s generally better to play open-world games in longer sessions rather than short bursts.
Broforce
For Freedom!
There are many games that try to recapture the feel of classic “run and gun” shooters, but Broforce is definitely the most over-the-top. Each level lets you play as a parody of a famous action hero from popular movies. For example, Brominator is a take on The Terminator, equipped with a Gatling Gun, and Ellen Ripbro is a spoof of Ellen Ripley from the Alien movies, wielding a flamethrower. The game features a large roster of characters that rotate frequently, similar to extra lives in a platformer. Everything in the environments is destructible, and it’s packed with endless entertainment, because levels fly by quickly.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy
Just Like Reading A Book
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy brings together the first three games in the series. Originally released on the Game Boy Advance, they were later enhanced for the Nintendo DS and are now available in high definition. In each game, you’ll tackle several court cases, where you must find contradictions in witness statements and examine evidence at crime scenes.
Players can easily pick up and play for just half an hour, enjoying interesting scenarios and well-written conversations before setting the game aside. This makes most visual novel games perfect for playing in short sessions, and the Ace Attorney series was one of the first to make this style popular, especially in North America back in the early 2000s.
Peglin
Peggle But With Goblins
- Developer: Red Nexus Games
- Publisher: Red Nexus Games, IndieArk
- Released: April 25, 2022
- Platform: Android, iOS, PC, Switch
Peglin is a roguelike game, but it plays very differently than Hades. You play as a small goblin and navigate through randomly created levels, battling enemies using a gameplay style inspired by Peggle. You can earn power-ups for your ball to defeat enemies quicker, but you need to be careful – if your goblin is defeated, the game is over. Like many puzzle games, it’s very engaging, and the roguelike and RPG elements make it even harder to stop playing. If you pace yourself, you can easily enjoy it for at least thirty minutes.
The King Is Watching
Roguelike Tactics
The King is Watching is a unique take on the roguelike genre. It plays somewhat like a smaller-scale Civilization or real-time strategy (RTS) game, where each character begins with a different starting situation. Players expand their kingdom bit by bit to gather resources. These resources are then used to build various structures – like marketplaces and barracks – to help protect their territory. While each playthrough varies, even successful attempts rarely take longer than half an hour, assuming players can pull themselves away from the appealing simplicity of The King is Watching.
