Role-playing games, or RPGs, are meant to offer players a lot of freedom – that’s really what defines the genre. However, with so many different kinds of RPGs available – and some focusing more on storytelling than others – players might not always get a true sense of how immersive these games can be.
Some games are so captivating they completely absorb you. If you’re looking for truly immersive experiences, here are five fantastic RPGs that you can easily spend days playing without realizing how much time has passed.
5. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
And Of Course, All It’s Expansions
The Northern Realms, a large region stretching from the Amell Mountains to the treacherous Dragon Mountains, is the setting for most of The Witcher 3. It’s a story about adventure, heartbreak, and a father’s relentless quest to find his lost daughter. Between Geralt’s arrival in White Orchard and his emotional reunion with Cirilla, his adopted ward, players will have a lot to do, and it all begins with what Witchers do best: hunting monsters.
Geralt’s world is much more than just fighting ghosts and rescuing children. Players will uncover forgotten lore, learn the true stories of interesting characters, and search for a way back to his beloved Yennefer of Vengerberg. While dangerous, Geralt’s journey offers endless things to do, easily captivating players for hours. And don’t forget Gwent – the addictive card game that demonstrates just how expansive the world is when you step away from the main storyline and seek out side quests. Be warned, though: you might lose more than just a few card games – and a good amount of your hard-earned Orens, too!
4. The Outer Worlds 2
A Wild-Wide Space To Explore
The Outer Worlds 2 is the latest installment in a series created by Obsidian Entertainment, a studio built by industry veterans—many from the renowned Black Isle Studios. Players familiar with this team’s work will likely know what to expect: a role-playing game packed with memorable characters, a wealth of side quests, and plenty of reasons to play it again. This sequel is even more captivating and difficult to put down than the original, The Outer Worlds. It’s also significantly larger, offering expansive open-world areas to explore across four major planets and numerous smaller locations throughout the solar system.
As a fan, I’m really excited about The Outer Worlds 2! From what I’ve seen, it’s going to have way more depth in combat and character creation than the first game. It sounds like the kind of game you can really lose yourself in – the worlds actually react to your choices as you try to prevent a huge war that could wipe out everything humanity has built. Seriously, be prepared to get hooked – you might not want to come back! Just saying, watch out and think before you act, because every decision matters.
3. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2
Medieval Mayhem And A Huge World To Explore
Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is a truly exceptional game. It boasts stunning world-building, memorable characters, and two massive open-world areas to discover, making it a strong contender for one of the greatest RPGs ever made. As players explore the lands of Old Bohemia, battling enemies like Cumans, bandits, and wild animals, they’ll quickly realize just how expansive and immersive the game truly is.
Even players who use fast travel aren’t safe from unexpected events, which can range from meeting helpful merchants to annoying knights eager for a fight with Henry of Skalitz. Players can also pursue the skills Henry learned from his parents: blacksmithing and herbalism/alchemy. These crafting activities are detailed and take time, allowing players to get truly lost in brewing potions or forging metal. This immersive quality is a key part of what makes Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 enjoyable, and a good reason to give the game a try.
2. Baldur’s Gate 3
The Finest D&D Game Ever Made
Baldur’s Gate 3 is a remarkable achievement in both game design and storytelling, clearly crafted by a team passionate about tabletop role-playing games. It’s built on the foundation of Dungeons & Dragons, the game that popularized the genre with its complex but enjoyable rules. While the game’s combat draws inspiration from D&D 5th Edition, players seeking a strictly faithful tabletop experience might find some differences. Despite this, Baldur’s Gate 3 has undoubtedly raised the standard for all RPGs that followed.
This game offers incredible replayability with countless choices and different outcomes, so you’ll never get tired of it. Will you create a Drow Death Domain Cleric, a Tiefling Bard, or perhaps an Arcane Archer Dwarf? The possibilities are endless! You can fully customize your character or choose from a selection of pre-made Origin Characters, including the intriguing Dark Urge. It’s a game filled with highs and lows, offering potentially thousands of hours of entertainment. You can easily lose track of time while exploring its epic Main Campaign, and a passionate modding community adds even more content and variety.
1. Octopath Traveler 2
All Paths Lead To Adventure
Octopath Traveler 2 is a fantastic RPG that doesn’t get enough credit. It improves on the original with more engaging characters and a captivating story, making it a top choice for anyone seeking a grand adventure. What truly sets it apart are the interwoven storylines – players can experience the game in many different ways, offering incredible replay value and countless hours of exploration in its expansive world.
This role-playing game feels like a blend of Final Fantasy and Bravely Default, taking the best elements from both. It stands out with its unique exploration system, where actions taken outside of battles help players find secrets, collect items, and finish hidden goals. Players are likely to enjoy this game for a very long time.
