As a gaming enthusiast, I was taken aback when Nintendo unveiled the Switch 2 this month, and one of the unexpected revelations was the integration of a built-in camera designed for live streaming games with my buddies, not to mention additional social features tailored for a more interactive gaming experience.
As a gamer, I was thrilled when Nintendo unveiled a camera for their console, but only when it’s docked. However, a clever peripheral maker has stepped up the game by creating a portable camera attachment! Now, whether I’m using my console handheld or docked, I can seamlessly stream, chat with friends, and more without any limitations.
Nintendo Switch 2 Portable Camera Will Be Available At Launch
HORI, a well-known accessory manufacturer, is producing an accessory for the Nintendo Switch 2, set to launch on June 5 (in Japan initially, according to Nintendo Everything). This new peripheral costs approximately $25, equivalent to 3,618 yen in current exchange rates. The device attaches to the console’s top when used in handheld mode, though its resolution is lower at 480p compared to the higher-resolution output provided by Nintendo’s official camera accessory, which is capable of 1080p.
Here are some of the accessory’s features, which confirmed it will have a dock of its own.
- This officially licensed product has been verified to be compatible with Nintendo products
- You can enjoy video calls anywhere with 3 different uses!
- Attach it to the included pedestal for use in TV mode and table mode
- Mounts directly to the Nintendo Switch 2 unit for portable mode
- Set it on TV and enjoy the big screen game with your friends!
As an enthusiast, I’d say my primary purpose for the camera will be to elevate my GameChat experience above all else. GameChat, a fantastic feature in the upcoming consoles, allows me to stream games live as I play with friends, all while engaging in real-time chat. Not only that, but some games are specifically designed to leverage this interactive platform, making it even more exciting!
As an enthusiast, I can tell you that acquiring peripherals for a console they’re not designed to work with is pointless without actually having the console itself. With GameStop and other retailers experiencing a digital meltdown when pre-orders began, and whispers suggesting that GameStop may not have many consoles in stock at launch, securing one at launch could prove challenging indeed.
Despite its potentially high cost, there’s strong anticipation that the new Nintendo Switch 2 could set a record as the most successful console debut in history, and it certainly seems plausible.
It’s unclear yet whether the camera accessory made by HORI will reach U.S. shores, but considering their frequent releases of accessories, it seems likely that they will bring it over eventually.
The Nintendo Switch 2 will be released on June 5, 2025, worldwide.
