Persona 3 Reload’s Joker Boss Battle Brings Persona 5 DLC Full Circle

Persona 3 Reload's Joker Boss Battle Brings Persona 5 DLC Full Circle

As a die-hard fan who has been following the Persona series since its inception, I can confidently say that the addition of Joker from Persona 5 as a challenge boss in Persona 3 Reload’s expansion pass is nothing short of brilliant! It’s like Atlus took a page straight out of the Phantom Thieves’ book and pulled off an audacious heist on our hearts.

At the 2023 Xbox Games Showcase, there was much anticipation when Persona 3 Reload was introduced, as fans of the Persona series had longed for over twenty years to witness a remake of the original P3. However, when Atlus later disclosed that P3R would lack the additional content found in Persona 3 FES and Persona 3 Portable, many were disheartened, feeling that the remake wouldn’t provide a comprehensive Persona 3 experience, despite how impressive the core game might be. Fortunately, Atlus listened to the fans’ feedback, as they announced in March 2024 that they would include The Answer epilogue from P3 FES as part of a paid expansion pack for Persona 3 Reload.

The $35 DLC titled “Episode Aigis – The Answer” serves as an extension of “Persona 3 FES“, reinstating the omitted content and introducing a multitude of new elements in the epilogue. These inclusions encompass Fusion Spells, Linked Episodes, and combat-ready Theurgies for the character Metis, as well as fresh interaction events to deepen your understanding of her. Furthermore, you’ll find remixed music, new cutscenes, and enhanced user experiences within this DLC. There are more features being introduced in the expansion, but during Gamescom 2024, Atlus unveiled that Joker from “Persona 5” will appear as a challenging boss in “Episode Aigis“. With this significant addition to the game, the expansion pass for “Persona 3 Reload” completes the circle of downloadable content from “Persona 5“.

Joker Being in Persona 3 Reload Makes Perfect Sense Given Persona 5’s DLCs

Atlus Released Various DLCs for the Original Persona 5

Following the release of Persona 5 on PS3 and PS4 in 2016, publisher Atlus continued to support the game with several paid DLCs post-launch. Unlike the additional story content found in the expansion for Persona 3 Reload’s Episode Aigis, these extras didn’t introduce new narrative elements but rather offered aesthetic enhancements to the game. Many costumes for the Phantom Thieves were included among these DLCs, with most of them inspired by other games within the Shin Megami Tensei series, such as SMT 4, Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. the Soulless Army, Persona 4 Arena, Persona 2 : Innocent Sin, and others. Atlus also offered new, potent Personas as downloadable content for Persona 5.

After the initial release of P5, Atlus provided some significant additional content called Challenge Battle DLCs. These weren’t found in the main game but instead formed part of an alternative game mode. In this mode, players had to battle waves of enemies within time-restricted trials that gradually increased in difficulty. These challenges became accessible through the Velvet Room once you had reached the second Palace in Persona 5. Initially, five of these battles were included with the base game, but eight more were made available as downloadable content.

Players Could Fight the Protagonists of Persona 3 and Persona 4 in P5’s Challenge Battle DLCs

In two special encounters during the Challenge Battles, players had the opportunity to engage in one-on-one duels against Makoto Yuki from Persona 3 and Yu Narukami from Persona 4. These boss fights weren’t just fun additions; they were some of the toughest battles found within Persona 5. In most instances outside of spin-off games like Persona 4 Arena and Persona Q, the mainline Persona game protagonists seldom had interactions with one another. Therefore, the chance for Joker to engage in combat with both Makoto and Yu was a significant event.

Given that characters from both Persona 3 and Persona 4 were included as boss fights in paid DLC for Persona 5, it’s only logical that the protagonist of P5 will appear as an optional boss battle in the Episode Aigis expansion of Persona 3R. Although some players might have preferred to fight other characters within the game rather than Joker, many fans are sure to be thrilled at the prospect of taking on the head of the Phantom Thieves in Persona 3 Reload.
