Recently, we’ve been seeing a surge of classic video games getting updated versions such as Atlus’ “Persona 3: Reload” and Bethesda’s “The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered”. These revamped editions rejuvenate old favorites, appealing to fans’ nostalgia. They also serve as stopgaps during extended gaps between major game releases, a common occurrence for franchises like “The Elder Scrolls” and “Persona”, whose next installments are yet to be completed. Additionally, these remakes offer developers an opportunity to experiment with new features and decide if they’re suitable for future titles, such as potential changes in a possible “Persona 4” remake.

Over the past few years, Atlus has been quite active, releasing the successful fantasy JRPG Metaphor: ReFantazio and modernizing Persona 3 with updated graphics and innovative gameplay features. It appears that they are not yet done revisiting classic games, as whispers of a possible Persona 4 Remake have surfaced following reports of a potential announcement website being set up for the title.

Persona 4’s Remake Could be a Testing Ground for Theurgy and Shift’s Staying Power

Testing the longevity of fresh features such as Theurgy and Shift from Persona 3: Reload could be effectively done with a potential remake of the game, Persona 4.

How Does Theurgy Work?

When a player gains the skill of Theurgy, a meter associated with it will appear beside each character’s portrait. Every character has a distinct method to quickly fill this meter. For instance, Junpei fills his by landing critical hits. On the other hand, the main character can increase their meter through swapping Personas and employing their abilities. Attacks, activations of Personas, and ambushes will also gradually fill each character’s meter. Once the Theurgy meter is full, the player can utilize it to execute a potent attack that ignores enemy resistance or a powerful support move capable of reviving allies, completely restoring their health, and granting multiple party-wide bonuses simultaneously. Characters affected by status ailments cannot use Theurgy, and their meter resets when they are knocked out.

How Does Shift Work?

Individuals accustomed to using the Baton Pass mechanic in “Persona 5” will recognize the functioning of “Persona 3: Reload”‘s Shift feature. This mechanism activates when a character lands a hit on an enemy’s weakness or deals critical damage, allowing the player to opt for either continuing with the same character or transferring to another party member via the ‘Shift’ option. Players can consistently shift characters as long as they can secure weakness or critical hits, until every team member has used up their “1 More” turns.

You can’t move to teammates until they’ve unlocked that ability first. However, they can achieve this by nurturing their bond with the other party members.

How Theurgy and Shift Could be Integrated into Persona 4’s Remake

The shift ability, which is simple and adaptable, can be easily added to any game within the Persona series. For instance, in the remake of Persona 4, players might unlock this ability for each character as they progress through the main story or tie it to a character’s relationship level, similar to Persona 3 Remake (P3R). The creators of the Persona 4 remake could opt to keep the Baton Pass buff from Persona 5 or choose not to include it, much like in P3R.

As a gamer, I’ve found that incorporating Theurgy can be tricky, given its narrative ties within the game. In P3R, for instance, it comes from a unique cartridge for our Evoker device. Maybe in the remake of P4, they could link this to the character’s persona cards that shatter upon summoning or a gadget we connect to our TVs, which allows us to dive into the Midnight Channel dungeons.

In the upcoming “Persona 4” remake, Atlus could experiment with refining the details of Theurgy and Shift mechanics. They might include or exclude certain features from these systems in the remake to gauge fan response. This feedback will help them decide if these new gameplay elements should appear in future games like “Persona 6”, and if so, how they can enhance them for optimal enjoyment.
