Since its debut in Persona 3, the series has consistently provided numerous means to foster relationships with friends, relatives, and schoolmates. From merging entities known as Personas for a Velvet Room caretaker to completing tasks for a mystical fox dwelling in a shrine, the Persona games encompass a wide range of activities. Introduced in Persona 4, Social Links featured a split system, allowing players to choose between two characters to connect with; in Persona 6, this concept could be expanded, offering multiple character Social Links. This addition would provide players greater freedom of choice and greatly enhance the game’s replayability.
Persona 4’s Split Social Links Explained
In the initial release of Persona 3 , there weren’t any splits in Social Links. But in Persona 3 Portable , some variations of Social Links were introduced, with the female protagonist having different connections compared to the male. The concept of true split Social Links was first introduced in Persona 4 through two Arcana: Strength and Sun. In the case of the Strength Arcana, there were two athletes, Daisuke Nagase and Kou Ichijo, who shared this link. Depending on which sports team the player joined, one of these links would be unlocked. Despite this, since both characters were friends, players could still engage with both individuals regardless of the chosen Social Link.
As a dedicated fan, I found the Sun links in Persona 4 to be an exciting new twist that set this game apart from its predecessors. By joining either the school band or the drama club, my character could interact with Ayane Matsunaga and Yumi Ozawa, respectively. The character I didn’t choose would be entirely absent from the story. What made this even more intriguing was that both Sun Links were potential romantic interests for the protagonist. This branching narrative added a layer of replayability that previous games didn’t have, and it became even more engaging as Persona 4 and especially Persona 4 Golden began to explore alternate endings, such as the Accomplice Ending.
Split Links Would Make A Great Addition To Persona 6
In the game “Persona 5”, the characters who represented Social Links, often referred to as Confidants, did not return for another appearance. One explanation could be that many of these non-Phantom Thief Confidants delved into the Mementos side-dungeon to transform the hearts of individuals connected to them. Consequently, introducing new social links would have required Atlus to develop additional Mementos targets and their associated boss battles, making the process more laborious.
Instead of keeping all Social Links together in Persona 6, introducing split links like those seen in Persona 4’s Strength and Sun would bring a fresh perspective and help the game stand out against Persona 5. For instance, links such as Ayane and Yumi’s, which are standalone stories with no overlap, prompt players to replay the game multiple times to experience each one. Various cards from the Major Arcana could be used for split Social Links; however, it might be intriguing to see a Link connected with a card symbolizing duality or indecision, like The Hanged Man or The Lovers. Even the Temperance card, traditionally linked to the four elements, could represent a Social Link featuring four distinct characters to choose from.
Character 6 might add diversity and repeat playability by featuring multiple conclusion scenarios, similar to what was seen in Persona 4 and Persona 5. These games primarily concentrated on “true” versus “good” endings, including numerous bad endings for reasons such as losing battles or falsely accusing murder suspects. However, Character 6 could expand upon this by giving players more decisions that significantly impact the game’s ultimate outcome. It is also possible that the conclusions in Character 6 could be influenced by the characters with whom the player chooses to build a Social Link relationship. No matter how it is implemented, the split Social Link system, like the one seen in Persona 4’s Courage and Chariot, should definitely reappear in Character 6.
