Persona 6’s Rumored Setting Primes it to Follow Persona 5 in One Way

Persona 6's Rumored Setting Primes it to Follow Persona 5 in One Way

As a long-time fanatic of the Persona series, I’ve seen my share of twists and turns in the world of Atlus games. With whispers of Persona 6 brewing, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and skepticism, much like the anticipation that accompanies the first day of school.

There’s been quite a buzz lately surrounding the possible release of Persona 6. Although it’s unlikely we’ll see it anytime soon, given that Atlus has recently put out the highly praised Game of the Year contender Metaphor: ReFantazio, there’s a glimmer of hope that it might make an appearance at The Game Awards 2024. If it does, it could either validate or dismiss various leaks and rumors circulating about the game, such as speculations about dual protagonists. It’s also been suggested that any trailer for Persona 6 would undoubtedly unveil its setting, with whispers claiming the game is set in an art school. However, this rumor should be taken with a pinch of salt, but if it’s true, it could offer intriguing insights into the game’s party composition.

In a fresh twist, instead of continuing to populate the world of Persona with characters who are artists by profession, it might be intriguing to explore a scenario where every character aspires to be an artist. This new approach could provide rich soil for developing Persona characters, as themes such as imagination, creativity, and ambition align perfectly with the franchise’s exploration of Jungian concepts related to identity and self-image. Furthermore, this concept could extend to the Personas used by party members in Persona 6 , just as Persona 5 delved into rebels and tricksters from diverse cultural backgrounds. Instead of mythological figures, the focus for Persona 6 could shift to characters from the art world.

Some rumors suggest that Persona 6 will release in summer 2025, but nothing is confirmed yet.

Persona 6 Might Continue The Phantom Thieves’ Break From Mythological Personas

Since the very beginning, I’ve found myself captivated by the rich mythology woven into the fabric of the Persona series. The original game’s cast could summon Personas from diverse mythological sources, while the Persona 2 duology delved deeper into Greek mythos. In Persona 3, we journeyed further into the realm of Greek gods and goddesses, and in Persona 4, we ventured into Japanese Buddhist and Shinto mythology. But with Persona 5, things took a fascinating turn. Instead of solely relying on mythological Personas, our team could tap into characters from literature, folklore, and art. From the valiant Musketeers to chilling Lovecraftian tales, the Phantom Thieves’ arsenal became an eclectic mix of stories that resonated with me deeply.

An Art School in Persona 6 Would Align With Persona 5’s Party Themes

Atlus selected these Personas to align with the game’s roguish motifs featuring noble thieves, however, it’s crucial to remember that exploring non-mythological cultural influences is equally important. Given the game’s narrative, it might be logical to assume that future games should continue this broad search for Persona inspiration. In the potential setting of Persona 6, an art school could perfectly encapsulate these themes. No matter what the overall plot may be, an art school environment would naturally make the game more fitting for literary and folkloric Personas. Ultimately, it boils down to finding the suitable Personas for the rest of the story.

Artistic Themes Can Take Persona 6’s Party in Many Directions

In one scenario, Atlus could distribute unique Personas among the characters if they all attend the same school. One possibility is that each character specializes in a different art form. For instance, one party member might have a Persona based on theater, another on music, another on sculpture, and so forth. Alternatively, every party member could be a painter, with their Personas coming from various aspects of art, such as actual artists or characters from famous paintings. No matter the specifics, an art school setting would provide Atlus with ample opportunities to explore contemporary culture for fresh and innovative new Persona designs.

Persona 6 Can Continue What Persona 5 Started

Developing literary personas in “Persona 6” seems logical given the extensive exploration of mythology in the series so far. We might expect characters from myths to appear, especially for the Wild Card persona to merge in the Velvet Room. The game is likely to broaden its scope in this area. Just as the Phantom Thieves’ rebellious personas reflected their roles as outcasts at Shujin Academy and in Tokyo, an art school setting could inspire “Persona 6” to create personas that align with the characters’ identities within the school context and various themes that may arise.
