Phantom Blade Zero Dev: ‘Nobody Needs Xbox’

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a bit taken aback by the bluntness of the Phantom Blade Zero developer. While it’s true that the gaming landscape has shifted significantly over the years, and certain platforms have risen to prominence, it’s never right to dismiss an entire ecosystem outright.

In a recent report from a Brazilian news source covering ChinaJoy 2024, it was stated that the developers of Phantom Blade Zero expressed critical opinions about the Xbox gaming platform. Developers behind both Black Myth: Wukong and Phantom Blade Zero shared they do not have exclusive partnerships with Sony and find no compelling reason to release their games on Xbox.

That’s a Bit Harsh

According to a recent article published by a Brazilian news outlet, during an interview at ChinaJoy 2024, when asked about the distribution platform for Phantom Blade Zero, the representative from S-GAME responded rather sharply.

Nobody needs this platform.

An unidentified game creator recently discussed Xbox. It’s been claimed that they expressed their viewpoint that the console market isn’t as thriving in Asia, a fact that holds true. Furthermore, they suggested that Microsoft has made it challenging to create games for the Xbox Series X|S due to a heavily congested development ecosystem.

As a long-time gamer, I’m thrilled to hear about the upcoming releases of Black Myth: Wukong and Phantom Blaction Zero. Having attended ChinaJoy 2024 myself, I can attest to the impressive presence of S-GAME and Game Science there. While I was disappointed that neither game will be available on Xbox, I understand that exclusivity deals aren’t uncommon in the gaming industry. However, as someone who has followed both developers’ work for quite some time, I have faith that they will deliver high-quality experiences on PlayStation 5 and PC. I can hardly wait to get my hands on Black Myth: Wukong on August 20, and Phantom Blade Zero in 2026. These releases are sure to be exciting additions to the gaming landscape, and I’m eagerly looking forward to them!

It seems they don’t believe there’s much demand for the Xbox platform anymore. This could be a controversial statement, but considering Microsoft’s hardware sales are decreasing and their focus appears to shift towards streaming and cloud services, it’s plausible that even Xbox might not require Xbox in the future.
