As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that Phasmophobia has undeniably left its mark on the horror genre and the gaming world at large. Four years ago, this modest gem from Kinetic Games burst onto the scene like a poltergeist in a haunted house, captivating players worldwide with its immersive ghost hunting gameplay.

Four years past, the innovative British gaming studio Kinetic Games unveiled an exceptional chilling game that transported eerie haunted houses right into your cozy abode.

Initially, Phasmophobia was just a charming experiment in virtual ghost hunting, but it soon grew into a worldwide sensation, placing it among the most played games globally in 2020.

Achieving the number one spot on the Steam best-seller list for three consecutive weeks during the build-up to the release of Cyberpunk 2077 is quite an accomplishment, but maintaining that level of sales success four years later is just as impressive.

Following their release on October 29 of this year for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, Phasmophobia has now achieved one million console sales.

In approximately a month and a bit, the game surpassed a significant milestone. Much of the praise is owed to the developers who managed to maintain the gaming experience consistently even as it transitioned between different platforms.

Last week, during an interview with TheGamer, Barbara Kciuk, a key storyteller at Bloober Team, discussed the reasons behind the impressive financial success of the horror genre compared to other forms of media.

While major titles like the Silent Hill 2 Remake pull all the stops to deliver in visual fidelity, it is the small time developers like Kinetic Games that make horror feel like alchemy.

As a dedicated follower, I can attest that, from what I’ve seen on the community Trello board, the creation of the early access version of Phasmophobia was a labor of love by a solo developer, spanning an impressive two-year period.

Four years later, the game has sold north of 22 million copies across platforms at $20 per unit.

Since the year 2020, Kinetic Games has experienced significant growth, yet it still maintains a compact workforce consisting of 14 team members in the present day.

Estimates from sources such as the Steam Revenue Calculator suggest that the game Phasmophobia has generated more than $123 million in net revenue, not including figures for console sales. The studio has yet to disclose the exact numbers.

Good Co-Op Means Evergreen Spooky Fun

The reason why a game such as Phasmophobia remains engaging is due to its innovative level designs that continually refresh its gameplay mechanics, and the cooperative aspect introduces an additional element of surprise.

A glance at the Steam statistics reveals that the game surpassed the 50,000 player milestone in November 2024.

In the initial two months, player count for Phasmophobia didn’t reach its highest peak, which occurred when it had more than 100,000 simultaneous gamers, but it was still the seventh-highest monthly total since the game started.

The success of Phasmophobia and Kinetic Games serve as a reminder that making good games has more layers than just throwing money at the problem then firing staff if it underperforms. For that, we salute them.
