As a seasoned gamer who’s seen more than my fair share of digital screams and jumps, I can confidently say that Phasmophobia has become a spine-tingling staple in our household. With over a thousand ghostly encounters under our belt, this game has proven to be an electrifying blend of suspense, strategy, and sheer terror.
Over the years, I’ve played numerous horror games, seeking an optimal balance of fear and enjoyment. This passion stems from my husband’s love for scary games, which is even greater than mine. For the past year, we’ve been particularly fascinated by our latest find – Phasmophobia. Unique among horror games, it’s now available on consoles in early access, just in time for Halloween!
In every round of Phasmophobia, my mission is straightforward yet challenging: I must identify the spectral entity haunting a location by making use of authentic ghost-hunting equipment. Each specter leaves distinct traces of evidence behind, so conducting a broad range of investigations is crucial to jot down the accurate type in my journal and secure my well-deserved payout. It would be ideal if these spirits welcomed my intrusion into their realm of the dead, but regrettably, they’re not always cooperative.
While investigating a haunted location to uncover ghostly activity, your mental stability gradually erodes. Activities such as standing in the dark or experiencing a ghostly event can drastically reduce your sanity level. As your sanity wanes, you become increasingly vulnerable to ghost attacks. When lights start flickering and eerie footsteps echo, it’s a good indication that the ghost may have trapped you inside the house and is actively pursuing you. The only way to survive is by finding a safe hiding spot and enduring the ordeal until you can escape. This experience is as thrilling as it seems, and even seasoned horror game enthusiasts might let out a scream or two.
There’s no real way to fight back against the ghost either. There’s no magic item that will kill the ghost or keep you safe in every situation, the only way to ensure your survival is to gather evidence as quickly as possible and get the hell out of there.
After identifying the room where the ghost prefers to linger (often characterized by disarray), you’ll find yourself making repeated trips to your reliable vehicle for your equipment. Some proof can be effortlessly gathered, such as leaving a book in a room and waiting for the ghost to scrawl or write a chilling message within it. However, other evidence is harder to come by, such as seeking UV marks on doors or capturing ghostly orbs using your video camera. It’s frustrating to wait patiently for the ghost to expose itself, all while feeling your sanity ebb away bit by bit.
Each ghost hunting session, lasting between five to ten minutes, is remarkably engaging and always offers something fresh due to its ever-changing nature. The unique maps and types of ghosts contribute significantly to this variability, but what makes it truly exciting are the unpredictable events that can occur. For instance, a mischievous spirit might reveal itself abruptly as you let out a scream, whisper eerily into your spirit box, or write something chilling that sends shivers down your spine instantly. Even after investing over 50 hours in the game, it continues to surprise and captivate me, and with an upcoming horror update on the horizon, the excitement is only set to increase.
I’ve personally played numerous solo sessions of Phasmophobia, a game often recognized for its multiplayer mode. This game allows up to four players to explore haunted houses, farms, and insane asylums together, making it possible for you and your friends to jointly endure the fear and share in each other’s ghost-hunting adventures, creating an unparalleled ghost-hunting experience.
For those who have mastered Phasmophobia on PC, they’re likely pondering how the game adapts to consoles. If you’ve dabbled in controller play on PC, that’s roughly what you can expect here. However, it remains somewhat tricky and counter-intuitive. I had hoped for some fine-tuning prior to console launch, but after a few hours of play, you should feel relatively at ease with the controls.
The console version of Phasmophobia is experiencing an issue as it doesn’t include voice detection at this time. While players can still communicate with their friends, the PC version allows for direct interaction with the ghost by speaking through the Spirit Box or Ouija board. In its place, you must press buttons to pose questions to the spirits. However, without any voice acting, this implementation feels less immersive and limits your ability to engage in specific interactions with the ghost.
Beyond these current problems, the console edition of the game carries some typical early access glitches. For instance, rain may not appear visibly although you can hear it, and objects might be unreachable in the main hub area. These minor inconveniences aren’t found in the PC version and stand out right away.
In Phasmophobia, there’s one aspect I find challenging at the moment – the slow beginning for new characters, largely due to the extended period required to unlock all your gear. The initial equipment is quite frustrating to work with (especially after getting accustomed to the upgraded versions), and you’re stuck using it for a considerable time. However, the developers have promised to tackle this issue in upcoming patches, so hopefully by the time the game reaches version 1.0, this won’t be an issue anymore.
Although it has some minor glitches on consoles, Phasmophobia remains one of the most intriguing, distinctive, and terrifying horror games available today. I anticipate spending countless more hours with this game, and hopefully, thanks to its console release, I’ll be doing so alongside a few unlucky friends as well. If you haven’t experienced Phasmophobia yet, now might be the perfect time to dive in, but remember, you may want to have an extra pair of underwear on hand.
Phasmophobia is in early access now for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S|X.
