As a dedicated Phasmophobia gamer, I’ve come across an intriguing mission called the “Tortoise and the Hare: Tortoise Challenge.” To conquer this challenge and savor its sweet victories, it’s crucial to understand its mechanics. Here’s my take on it!

What is Challenge Mode in Phasmophobia?

In the game Phasmophobia, there’s a special weekly event called the “Weekly Special Contract” or simply “Challenge Mode”. This mode assigns players a unique mission to a specific location with a pre-determined equipment setup. You can’t alter this setup in any way. The challenge location is displayed on a board, and you can check the current week’s assignment by navigating to the ‘Weekly Tasks’ section on the Main Menu board at the bottom. Completing up to ten of these challenges will earn you three achievements: “Challenger Approaching”, “Rise to the Challenge”, and “Taking All Challenges”.

Each Challenge Mode offers an additional base reward of $5,000 above any other earnings from identifying the ghost and finishing supplementary goals. This puts it among the highest-paying activities within the game, second only to fulfilling contracts at Insanity or Nightmare difficulty levels.

To earn the rewards for Challenge Mode this week and meet the requirement, you need to accomplish the specified contract not just once, but a total of three times. These completions do not have to be back-to-back victories, but they must fall within the current week’s timeframe. Keep in mind that Challenge Mode is reset every Sunday, along with all other Weekly Tasks. There are more than two dozen types of challenges available, including the Glow in the Dark Challenge.

To join the ongoing Challenge Mode task, first decide if you want to play alone or with others by selecting ‘Singleplayer’ or ‘Multiplayer’. After that, adjust the ‘Difficulty’ level according to your preference. Continue scrolling until you locate the “Challenge Mode option“. Here, you can view the specific challenge details and track your progress on it.

Click on ‘Apply’ located in the bottom right, then navigate to the ‘Locations’ board to your left. On this board, find the map mentioned in the task and click on it. After that, return to the Main Menu. As challenges don’t allow equipment changes, you will see a message stating “a challenge-specific loadout is provided at no cost.” Once you see this, you are all set to embark on your contract journey.

How to Complete Tortoise and the Hare: Tortoise Challenge in Phasmophobia

In the game Phasmophobia, completing the Tortoise Challenge at Grafton Farmhouse is remarkably tough. You’ll earn maximum points only if you manage to finish this challenge a total of three times, each time strictly within the Grafton Farmhouse map.

This challenge is unique because its conditions run counter to those in the story of the Tortoise and the Hare; it’s often referred to as the “Hare Challenge.” In fact, this challenge shares similarities with other challenges within the game. Notably, it is traditionally played after the original game scenario, according to the official description. The game portrays this challenge like this: “After last week, you’re feeling rather tired, and to add to your troubles, the ghost has regained its strength!

Essentially, this game situation places you at a distinct disadvantage since your character’s speed is reduced to about three-quarters of its regular pace. On the other hand, the ghost will be scorching through the levels at an astounding 150% of its typical speed, making it noticeably swifter than usual. Remember, this increased speed doesn’t help you in identifying the ghost for this challenge.

In this contest, the hunting periods are shorter than normal, but if a player is eliminated during the hunt, the duration may extend. It’s also possible for multiple kills in this challenge, so if you’re playing with others, it’s strongly advised to maintain some distance between team members, especially during hunts. If not, the ghost could potentially eliminate everyone nearby.

In this game, there’s a good chance that the ghost might switch its preferred room, similar to Professional Mode or above. This implies that if the ghost appears inactive in its room after some time, you should inspect the neighboring rooms or areas as it may have moved. To add to the complexity, most doors within Grafton Farmhouse will initially be open, so you can’t rely on them to indicate the ghost’s location. However, the ghost’s overall activity will remain more than usual, making it possible to locate it through other signs of activity.

Regarding the gear at your disposal, everything is of mid-tier quality throughout. Unfortunately, there are no Firelight items here, which could potentially make maintaining one’s composure more challenging. Additionally, it seems that verifying an Onyro ghost isn’t an option as you require three Firelights to perform such a test.

During the course of this challenge, a mysterious artifact, referred to as the Hidden Relic, will occasionally appear at random locations on the game map. If you choose to utilize it, your task is to locate it first. Initially, the Switch (or Powerbox) will be active at the start of each round, allowing you to toggle it on and off to illuminate various areas of the map with light.

Make sure to use all resources wisely and, if feasible, team up to move equipment into the farmhouse faster. Having friends around could assist in determining the ghost’s identity quicker too, and they can serve as a protection should anyone meet an untimely end.
