Obsidian Entertainment is launching a public beta test for a highly requested feature in Pillars of Eternity. The test will be open to all players beginning November 5th.
2025 has been a fantastic year for Obsidian Entertainment, with successful RPGs like Grounded and the highly anticipated The Outer Worlds 2. The studio hasn’t neglected its older titles either, particularly the Pillars of Eternity series, which was inspired by classic games like Baldur’s Gate. The world of Eora, established in Pillars of Eternity and continued in Deadfire, is also the setting for their new game, Avowed. Fans of Deadfire were able to experiment with a turn-based combat system, which changed the game’s traditional pacing. Now, after hinting at it earlier this year, Obsidian has announced a beta release of this turn-based combat for the original Pillars of Eternity game.
Pillars of Eternity Adding Turn-Based Mode With Public Beta, Starts November 5th
Obsidian announced that the classic game Pillars of Eternity will soon receive a Turn-Based Mode. A public beta will launch on November 5th, 2025, letting players experience combat with a new tactical approach. The developers are refining the system based on lessons learned from implementing it in Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, aiming for faster and more precise battles that fans will appreciate. A convenient feature allows players to switch between the standard real-time combat and the new turn-based mode at any time.
If you enjoyed Pillars of Eternity, now’s a great time to revisit the world! While a third game hasn’t been announced – the first two relied on crowdfunding – Obsidian Entertainment has since been acquired by Microsoft and released successful titles like The Outer Worlds and Pentiment. This latest development might open the door for a new Pillars of Eternity game, and even if it doesn’t, it’s sure to please both longtime fans and new players.
