Pirate Software Swatted and Sent ‘Thousands’ of Death Threats

Streamer Pirate Software alleges that he was recently the target of a swatting incident and has received numerous death threats. Known as a Twitch streamer and independent game developer, Pirate Software is the creator of the role-playing game “Heartbound,” which has been in early access since 2018. Lately, Pirate Software has been balancing streaming, game development, and other endeavors.

Previously in the year, Pirate Software belonged to the elite gaming group known as OnlyFangs, dedicated to the challenging World of Warcraft Classic. However, his membership came to an unfortunate end during a raid on Dire Maul North, resulting in the permanent loss of several guild members’ characters due to his actions – namely, abandoning his teammates and making insensitive remarks about the incident. These actions were met with strong disapproval within the guild, leading to Pirate Software’s expulsion. More recently, he has faced renewed criticism online for comments regarding the Stop Killing Games initiative.

The Stop Killing Games movement seeks to ensure continued playability of online-exclusive video games even after they’re discontinued, by encouraging game developers to prepare end-of-life plans. This might involve fan-managed servers, offline modes, or single-player conversions for their live-service and other online-only titles. The initiative has garnered widespread consumer support but also faces criticism, particularly from Pirate Software. They argue that the initiative’s broad scope could technically limit game developers from creating certain types of online games like MMOs, MOBAs, and user-generated content games in the future, potentially hindering innovation and creativity. In essence, Pirate Software contends that this could unintentionally restrict the development of groundbreaking gaming experiences by imposing constraints on design choices.

Pirate Software’s Stance on Stop Killing Games Has Led to Death Threats and Swatting

According to a Twitch stream by Pirate Software, he was subjected to a “swatting” incident on July 1st and has received an overwhelming number of death threats, approximately tens of thousands. He further stated, “I’ll be candid with you. I wish that your endeavor gets everything you requested, but nothing you desired. And I’ll stop there.

The petition titled “Stop Killing Games” has experienced a significant surge in support during the past month, possibly due to the recent Pirate Software controversy. At present, it has accumulated an impressive 1,175,179 signatures. It’s intriguing to consider what future developments this movement may bring.
