Pirates Who Are Animals In One Piece:

As a long-time fanatic of One Piece, I must say that the animal pirates in this series are as fascinating as they are unique. Each one has their own story, abilities, and place within their respective crews.

In the world of One Piece, both animals and their unique capabilities are frequently highlighted, especially in relation to pirate crews. Although there are numerous characters that resemble animals, like Zoan Devil Fruit users, minks, and beings such as fish-men, sometimes a pirate is essentially an anthropomorphic animal.

Though usually considered less intelligent compared to many other species, animals often possess endearing qualities that make them appealing, like their physical power, loyalty, and unique skills or talents that humans might not have. They typically form strong bonds with one human member of the crew, although this isn’t always true. These characters are sometimes referred to as “pets,” but they can play crucial roles within the team on occasion.

5 Monster

Musician of the Red Hair Pirates

Pirates Who Are Animals In One Piece:

  • Debut: Chapter 1 (Manga), Episode 489 (Anime)
  • Species: Monkey
  • Devil Fruit: None

This monkey, who usually wears a topknot, has been with the Red Hair Pirates for quite some time. He’s frequently spotted alongside Bonk Punch, and they often engage in battles together. Compared to most animals, he appears quite intelligent, suggesting an understanding of human behavior. His active involvement in fights isn’t shown much, but this is mainly due to the limited amount of screen time given to the crew so far.

Because his crew is highly respected, it’s assumed he holds some power. His leadership position further bolsters this assumption. As the Red Hair Pirates gain more attention, it’s expected that his abilities will be scrutinized more closely. Notably, Monster isn’t the only monkey pirate; even Doma, a former subordinate of Whitebeard, is seen fighting alongside one.

4 Richie

Member of Cross Guild, Former Captain of the Buggy Pirates

Pirates Who Are Animals In One Piece:
  • Debut: Chapter 9 (Manga), Episode 6 (Anime)
  • Species: Lion
  • Devil Fruit: None

Richie, who is Mohji’s pet lion, has always been a part of the Buggy Pirates, even in their various forms. Since Mohji is a professional animal trainer, his value to the crew relies heavily on his skills with Richie. During the Orange Town arc, Mohji was among the pirates that Luffy and his team confronted as they defended the town. However, after Luffy managed to defeat Richie, Mohji became too timid to face Luffy in a real fight.

After vanquishing Buggy and his vanishing act, I find myself stepping up as captain of our crew, outranking Mohji and Cabaji. Under my command, we found ourselves in the clutches of the Kumate tribe, those man-eating cannibals. Thankfully, Buggy and Alvida swooped in to rescue us. As time goes on, I’ve been portrayed less as a terrifying beast and more like a goofy character in this pirate series of ours.

3 Stronger

Doc Q’s Steed

Pirates Who Are Animals In One Piece:
  • Debut: Chapter 223 (Manga), Episode 146 (Anime)
  • Species: Horse
  • Devil Fruit: Uma Uma no Mi, Model: Pegasus

A pirate horse named Stronger, belonging to the Blackbeard Pirates group, frequently associates with Doc Q, a pirate physician, and one of their Ten Captain-ranked crew members. In an unusual twist, despite his profession, Stronger’s owner is too weak to move around, and Stronger carries him. Despite Stronger’s own questionable health, he remains powerful and robust. Ironically, however, Stronger doesn’t seem to be in the best of shapes himself.

Because Doc Q had been with the Blackbeard Pirates for such a long time, Stronger has been a part of their team since they only had five members. He then consumed a Mythical Zoan Devil Fruit that enables him to transform into a pegasus. Given that Stronger is already horse-like, it appears this power merely lets him fly. The details about how he gained this ability remain unclear, but given the Blackbeard Pirates’ past deeds, it was probably taken from someone they defeated.

2 Farul

Cavendish’s Steed

Pirates Who Are Animals In One Piece:
  • Debut: Chapter 772 (Manga), Episode 634 (Anime)
  • Species: Horse
  • Devil Fruit: None

As one of the swashbuckling crew members aboard the Beautiful Pirates’ ship, I’ve had my fair share of thrilling adventures, but there’s one special companion who stands out – Farul, Captain Cavendish’s loyal steed. This magnificent beast has been by his side since we were young buccaneers, as Oda himself portrayed us together in his sketches when we were just kids.

As a gamer, I can’t help but share an incredible survival tale – I miraculously endured a situation where my skull was cracked by a menacing headcracker doll, leaving me unconscious for a while before I regained consciousness. Much like my captain, I exhibit a certain level of sophistication, sipping tea with my hooves, which seems quite unusual given that I don’t seem to possess the limbs required for such delicate maneuvers.

1 Tony Tony Chopper

Doctor of the Straw Hat Pirates

Pirates Who Are Animals In One Piece:
  • Debut: Chapter 134 (Manga), Episode 81 (Anime)
  • Species: Reindeer
  • Devil Fruit: Hito Hito no Mi

Without a doubt, Tony Tony Chopper, arguably the most valuable animal member in any pirate crew, was initially a doctor on Drum Island, where he learned the art of medical science from Kureha. Later on, he consumed the Hito Hito no Mi, granting him human-like intelligence, which led to his estrangement from his clan due to his distinctive blue nose. Feeling misunderstood, Chopper joined the Straw Hat Pirates upon their visit to the island. Unlike other animal pirates, Chopper doesn’t necessarily need a human companion, but he has formed strong bonds with many of his fellow crew members.

Beyond Chopper’s impressive medical abilities, he’s also a warrior who strategically employs his Devil Fruit powers’ physiology to develop diverse shapes tailored to showcase his skill set. He often assumes his “brain point” form, which enables him to think more deeply and critically. This particular form is the one that receives the most attention in public circles, frequently causing him to be mislabeled as a “pet,” despite his status among the animal pirates being far from deserving such a label.
