As a seasoned theme park enthusiast and avid gamer, I must say that Planet Coaster 2 has truly taken my breath away! Having spent countless hours designing and building roller coasters and parks in the original game, I was eager to dive into this new iteration with its enticing promises of enhanced customization, improved mechanics, and fresh challenges.
Get ready to dive into the world of Planet Coaster 2, where you can design and build pools, slides, and other water park attractions like never before! With a host of fresh and thrilling features for both water and coaster parks, including advanced ride customization options, this sequel promises an immersive experience. Although the preliminary look at Planet Coaster 2 provided a hint of what’s to come, Game Rant recently got a chance to delve deeper into the game by trying out its Career and Sandbox Modes during a packed hands-on preview event. We were not only tasked with completing one of Planet Coaster 2‘s Career Mode challenges, but we also had the freedom to experiment with many of the new tools and systems that will help players build their dream theme parks.
During our initial hands-on session, we had the opportunity to experiment with approximately 45 minutes of a Career Mode scenario from ‘Planet Coaster 2,’ titled ‘Double Trouble.’ This scenario is found in chapter three of the game’s campaign. Unlike many previous Career Mode scenarios in ‘Planet Coaster,’ ‘Double Trouble’ presented an engaging twist, where we were tasked with managing a park that was divided into two sections, essentially creating a dual park setup.
Planet Coaster 2’s ‘Double Trouble’ Career Mode Scenario And New Heatmaps
Starting things off, I found myself in a lively banter with Oswald B. Thompson, Eugene Newton, and Kenta, reminiscent of our usual chats. Right from the start, Kenta’s list of prerequisites popped up on the screen. Although silver and gold targets were locked for preview, we could still earn a bronze medal by completing these tasks:
- Build a pool on Kenta’s side of the park with a minimum of 450 Pool Prestige.
- Build at least two flumes on Kenta’s side and set them to open.
In our excitement to start, we unintentionally positioned a pool blueprint on the incorrect side of the park. Upon noticing this oversight, we quickly found the new heatmap function in Planet Coaster 2 by pressing a button at the top of the screen. This feature showed the sections owned by Kenta and Oswald using distinct colors and labels, as illustrated below.
While players could use heatmaps on Planet Coaster’s rides to check things like G-force and nausea ratings, it seems heatmaps play a bigger and more park-wide, high-level role in Planet Coaster 2 from a park management perspective. For instance, Planet Coaster 2‘s heatmaps have much more information to cycle through, including guest happiness, power, scenery ratings, and more. While we didn’t get time to check out everything, all of this felt like helpful additions to give players even more things at their fingertips.
Building Pools And Flumes In Planet Coaster 2’s Career Mode
To fulfill Kenta’s specifications, we couldn’t rely on existing swimming pool blueprints; instead, we had to create two custom flumes from the ground up. Thankfully, the Pool Tool in Planet Coaster 2 simplified the construction process. We swiftly built our fundamental pool shapes using the Stamp Builder tool, which allowed us to easily create square and hexagonal pools with a single click. The Draw tool was another option we didn’t explore this time. Kenta’s list also pushed us to enhance the Pool Prestige level by incorporating various attractive pool scenery elements, such as unicorn floats, rubber rings, ladders, and shells. We utilized the Stamp Builder again to create paths leading to the pools, a process that felt smooth and efficient.
Subsequently, we constructed two water slides for our pools, akin to constructing roller coasters in the game Planet Coaster. To expedite the process, we opted to add a spiral body slide around an existing pool design. We had numerous possibilities to incorporate twists, turns, and additional creative features if desired. Naturally, we also tested our slides, incorporated appropriate entry and exit points, and linked them to paths, providing players with additional challenges to consider.
Having A Blast In Planet Coaster 2’s Sandbox Mode – Trying The Power System, Wave Machines, And Riding The Flumes
In our exploration of the Sandbox Mode for Planet Coaster 2, we primarily concentrated on designing rides, customizing them, and adding a pool complete with a wave machine. One of the key enhancements in Planet Coaster 2 includes a novel power system for rides and amenities such as food and beverage vendors, which can’t function without power, along with a water purification system to maintain cleanliness in pools. Initially, it took some effort to grasp the workings of the new power system, necessitating the connection of generators to power outlets and then the rides or facilities themselves using cables, as depicted in the image. However, everything became clear once we understood how to proceed with the assistance of heatmaps. Rides and facilities requiring power also show a convenient red power symbol, indicating their needs clearly and offering players an additional level of complexity to consider when planning their theme parks.
In summary, we successfully launched and operationalized two attractions – the Aquatic Forge and Aquatic Teacups, both spinning and ascending. To enhance the tea cup ride, we incorporated singing animatronic eels, a user-friendly addition offering plenty of creative liberty without complications. Subsequently, we amplified the wave pool’s scenic appeal by incorporating additional aquatic scenery into its design, featuring an integrated wave machine that boosted its overall rating. Players can also easily attach wave machines and jets to their personalized pool constructions, all with minimal hassle. Additionally, players can adjust the wave intensity for a realistic experience even as guests swim through them. It’s evident Frontier has meticulously addressed numerous details to ensure an authentic theme park atmosphere that sparkles and delights. Naturally, we couldn’t resist testing the flumes ourselves in guest mode, which brought smiles all around and reminded us of enjoyable summer vacation moments overseas.
Although we didn’t have a chance to test the new water filtration system initially, we found out later that it operates in a manner reminiscent to powering amusement rides. Additionally, we observed park visitors enjoying themselves, and noticed one distinctive feature: guests could have emotional symbols floating above their heads, demonstrating just one aspect of how players can track the emotions of park attendees.
Planet Coaster 2 Gives Players Numerous Creative Tools And Challenges
In summary, both seasoned and novice Planet Coaster gamers should have a fantastic time exploring Planet Coaster 2, as it introduces additional creative features to explore. Although some elements of park management systems and interfaces appeared familiar, there were also numerous updates and new additions that increased the level of challenge. Notably, modifications to the park management overview menus seemed more comprehensive yet intuitive. In essence, the building and customization options in Planet Coaster 2 felt significantly improved and expansive, offering players even more engaging ways to design and share their dream theme parks.
Planet Coaster 2 is due for release in Fall 2024.
