Platinum Games Acquires 2013 Action Title Trademark From Nintendo

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia mixed with anticipation as Platinum Games takes full control of the beloved action game, The Wonderful 101. This franchise has been near and dear to my heart ever since I first played it on the Wii U back in 2013.

Now under the complete ownership of Platinum Games, the 2013 action title known as “The Wonderful 101” has been acquired from Nintendo. Originally developed and published by Platinum Games themselves, “The Wonderful 101” was a critically acclaimed exclusive for the Wii U console, despite not meeting sales targets.

2020 found me as a proud owner of the publishing rights for “The Wonderful 101,” previously owned by Nintendo. With a Kickstarter campaign, we aimed to bring this classic to modern consoles, and boy did fans show up! The demand was so high that we surpassed our initial $50,000 goal in just half an hour. Now, four years later, it seems the team at Platinum Games has not only secured the remastered version of the game but also a whole lot more!

According to VGC’s report, on August 19, Platinum Games submitted a petition to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office seeking exclusive rights to the entire The Wonderful 101 franchise from Nintendo. Both parties have consented to this petition, which will become official on September 9, 2024. As a result, Platinum Games now holds sole control over the intellectual property (IP) of The Wonderful 101, allowing them to develop any future sequels or spin-offs.

Platinum Games Acquires the Full Rights to The Wonderful 101 Franchise

Obtaining full ownership of the “The Wonderful 101” series will be viewed as a significant triumph for Platinum Games amidst their challenging past few years. Following a string of high-profile disappointments like “Scalebound”, “Babylon’s Fall”, and “World of Demons”, this Japanese studio has been attempting to sever ties with major industry heavyweights and instead, publish its own creations. Furthermore, Platinum Games separated from one of its founders, Hideki Kamiya, in 2023 due to a shift in the company’s strategic focus.

As a devoted fan, I find it quite intriguing when Nintendo decides to part ways with an IP like they did with “The Wonderful 101”. Normally, Nintendo keeps its owned properties close, even if there are no immediate plans for their use. However, it’s plausible that they chose to entrust the rights of this game to Platinum Games, enabling them to concentrate on refining the development of both the “Bayonetta” and “Astral Chain” series. Both these franchises have been developed by Platinum Games but financed and published by Nintendo, with “Bayonetta” being the fan favorite. The highly anticipated “Bayonetta 3”, released in 2022, shattered sales records for both Platinum and Nintendo.

Despite Platinum Games remaining silent on the possibility of a follow-up to The Wonderful 101, they’ve indicated their eagerness to revisit the series in the past. In the meantime, speculation swirls that Platinum Games could be among the pioneers backing Switch 2, with whispers suggesting they are developing a remastered trilogy of Bayonetta games.
