As a long-time Star Wars enthusiast who’s spent countless hours immersed in the galaxy far, far away, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nostalgia upon hearing about the resurrection of the canceled Star Wars: Battlefront 3. Growing up, I was captivated by the original Battlefront games on the PlayStation 2, and the prospect of experiencing the third installment has been a dream unfulfilled for far too long.

A playable build of the canceled third Star Wars: Battlefront game has surfaced, and modders have taken it upon themselves to finish it. Before DICE rebooted the Star Wars Battlefront series in 2015, now-defunct developer Free Radical gave Star Wars fans the ability to live out their favorite skirmishes from the classic movies in the original Star Wars: Battlefront back in 2004. A sequel was released a year later to coincide with Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith, incorporating elements from that film in addition to space battles and playable Hero characters like Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader.

In the time that followed, several portable and mobile versions of “Star Wars: Battlefront” were launched, with Free Radical intending to carry on the main series. The third installment would have taken advantage of advanced technology for continuous ground-to-space combat, while the fourth was envisioned as a “what-if” storyline featuring alternate “Star Wars” scenarios such as Luke Skywalker joining the dark side. Regrettably, neither of these projects materialized, as “Star Wars: Battlefront 3” was allegedly scrapped in 2008 due to a turbulent development phase. Steve Ellis, a co-founder of Free Radical Design, later asserted that “Star Wars: Battlefront 3” was almost completed when LucasArts terminated the project.

Although Star Wars: Battlefront 3 was never released officially, fragments of the game have resurfaced online since its cancellation. As GamesRadar reports, a team of game preservationists known as Free Radical Archives recently discovered a playable version of the canceled Star Wars: Battlefront 3 for the Nintendo Wii, created only about a week before the project was said to have been terminated. YouTube user iamashaymin Modding shared a homemade trailer using footage from this build, showcasing cutscenes of Clone Troopers and other Imperial forces pursuing Jedi during Order 66.

Modders Want to Finish Playable Star Wars: Battlefront 3 Build

In terms of gameplay, the upcoming “Star Wars: Battlefront 3” appears to share similarities with its predecessors, featuring soldiers from both the Original and Prequel sagas engaged in combat across iconic Star Wars landscapes. The objective is to capture and hold as much territory as possible while depleting the enemy forces within a set timeframe. At some point, players may encounter Rahm Kota, a character first introduced in “Star Wars: The Force Unleashed” of 2008, who was later referenced in the 2022 “Obi-Wan Kenobi” series.

Star Wars: Battlefront 3, an unfinished game, is being worked on by Free Radical Archives to make it as good as possible. However, they acknowledge that certain issues like bugs and glitches might persist and remain unresolved. Their goal is to offer the gaming community a glimpse of what could have been with a free version release, providing players an opportunity to experience the incomplete Star Wars: Battlefront game.
