Playstack announces new horror, ‘Darkwater’

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Darkwater has piqued my interest immensely. Having survived countless alien invasions, submarine battles, and creepy abandoned hospitals (not to mention the occasional infected diver or two), I find myself drawn to this co-op extraction horror game like a moth to a flaming sonar.

Yesterday at the PC Gaming Show, Playstack and Targon Studios unveiled a fresh cooperative horror game titled Darkwater. Building on the success of Balatro, Playstack is maintaining its momentum by teaming up with Targon to launch this horror title next year on PC. To complement the announcement, a trailer has been made available which can be viewed at the bottom of this article.

Gather a top-tier squad of no more than 4 submariners, aiming to endure the frigid abyss of an alien world. A perplexing illness has decimated the surface settlements, prompting the authorities to freeze the ocean in return. Enclosed beneath a layer of dense ice, you and your team must face various hardships as you search for essential fuel. Persevere under any circumstances to survive.

In Darkwater, you find yourself in a struggle for survival, battling both humans and strange beasts while journeying from one outpost to another. The uncertainty of who’s friend and who’s foe adds an extra dose of tension, as you may encounter potential allies or adversaries along the way. The game also includes underwater combat against hostile submarines, requiring you to master various on-board systems and make use of a diverse array of weapons, tools, and rooms to improve and customize your submersible. Some of these include:

  • A range of powerful torpedoes

  • Harpoons

  • Decoy mines

  • Depth charges

  • Sonar upgrades

  • Manned torpedoes (for the ultimate in-person surprise)

To thrive, gamers must search for fuel and money, and possess the skill to anchor your submarine in unpredictable underwater labyrinths to confront whatever lurks beneath. From eerie deserted hospitals teeming with infected divers to forgotten manufacturing facilities inhabited by extraterrestrial beings, there’s ample peril for players to discover and eliminate without meeting an untimely end.
