According to the main designer of Final Fantasy 9, the PlayStation 2 had such a strong processor that it actually worried military officials.
Rumors of a Final Fantasy 9 remake have largely stopped after a trusted source suggested the project may be paused. While fans await official news, someone involved with the game recently shared a memory about the PlayStation 2, pointing out just how powerful that console was for its time.
PlayStation 2’s CPU Was ‘So Overpowered’ That It Led to Export Restrictions
In a recent Famitsu interview (translated by GamesRadar+), Final Fantasy 9’s Kazuhiko Aoki shared that testing the game on the PlayStation 2 proved challenging because of the console’s powerful processor. Near the end of his time in Hawaii, the team considered sending Aoki PS2 testing equipment to see if Final Fantasy 9 could run on it. However, the PS2’s CPU was so strong that concerns arose about its potential military applications, leading to restrictions on exporting the console.
After a significant delay and a challenging period for the team, the console was finally delivered to the developers of Final Fantasy 9.
Here’s a quick update: The director of Final Fantasy 7 Remake would prefer someone else take the helm for a potential Final Fantasy 6 Remake. They’ve also said that the core experience for the third part of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake is finished. On a different note, some people are discussing how surprisingly powerful the PlayStation 2’s processor was, even raising concerns for military applications.
