Sony is set to raise prices for the PlayStation 5 consoles in the United States. This adjustment will affect not only the standard physical and digital editions of the regular PS5, but also the more powerful PS5 Pro.
The PlayStation 5 was released towards the end of 2020, priced at $500 for the standard model and $400 for the digital edition without disc drive. Unlike previous consoles which typically experienced price drops throughout their lifetimes, the PS5 has not followed this trend so far. On the contrary, there have been price increases in various regions over the past few years. For instance, the Slim Digital Edition that came out in late 2023 saw a $50 price hike. Last year, Sony attributed the lack of price decrease to the complexity of reducing the die size of the PS5’s chipset, and this challenge persists today.
PS5 Prices Will Increase By $50 in the US from Tomorrow
Beginning August 21, the cost of owning a PS5 is set to rise. Sony announced in a recent PlayStation Blog post that the console’s price will increase by $50 across all models, effective tomorrow. This means the PS5 Digital Edition will be priced at $499 instead of $449, the standard PS5 will cost $549 rather than $499, and the already debated $699 PS5 Pro will now cost $749. The price increase is due to a difficult economic climate, and for now, prices for the console’s accessories remain unchanged in the US.
PS5 Price Increase Details
- Goes into effect tomorrow, August 21
- Blanket $50 increase for all PS5 versions
- PS5 Digital Edition: $499
- PS5: $549
- PS5 Pro: $749
Following the announcement from Sony’s Chief Financial Officer, Lin Tao, during the Q4 FY2025 earnings call, global inflation and trade disputes between the US and China (where most PS5 units are produced) could potentially cause a rise in console prices. Interestingly, just a month before this statement, Sony had already increased the cost of PS5 in key regions like the UK, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, among others, attributing it to a difficult economic climate, high inflation rates, and volatile currency exchange rates. It seems that Sony delayed increasing prices in the US as long as they could, given its strength as the leading PlayStation market.

Indeed, Sony isn’t an exception among console manufacturers who have recently increased their prices. In fact, Microsoft announced price increases for Xbox consoles, accessories, and games ($80) as well in May. Remarkably, the PS5 will cost $50 less than the Series X, which now retails at $600. The affordability of these consoles upon launch is quite astonishing.
