According to Sony CFO Lin Tao, the PlayStation 5 is still expected to have several more years of strong performance, as it’s currently only halfway through its lifecycle.
During Sony’s recent earnings call, CFO Line Tao explained that the PlayStation 5 is still only halfway through its expected lifespan. Comparing it to the PlayStation 4, which remained popular for over a decade, Tao indicated that console lifecycles are getting longer. She stated that Sony plans to continue supporting and expanding the PS5 for years to come, as many users are still actively playing it.
So, When Will The PS6 Release?
Tao isn’t saying the PlayStation 6 is five years off. She’s suggesting the PlayStation 5’s generation will be a long one, similar to how developers are just now starting to fully move past the PlayStation 4, even with the PS5 being out.
The PlayStation 6 is currently expected to launch sometime between 2027 and 2028, while Sony plans to continue supporting the PlayStation 5 until around 2031 or 2032.
Developers continue to support older consoles primarily for financial reasons. Releasing games on both current and previous-generation consoles significantly expands the potential audience. For example, when the PlayStation 6 launches and sells an estimated 10-15 million units in its first year, limiting releases to only that console wouldn’t be practical. It’s much more effective to also release on the PlayStation 5, which is projected to have over 100 million units in use by 2027, effectively multiplying the player base.
That’s why games like Call of Duty continue to be available on older consoles – there are still a lot of people playing on those systems.
