Claims are circulating online that the security keys for the PlayStation 5, known as ‘ROM keys,’ have been stolen and shared. If true, this would make it much easier for people to modify the console’s software. Experts are calling this a potentially permanent problem, bringing the possibility of jailbroken PS5 consoles closer to reality.
Recently, people online have been discussing a new security issue with the game Star Wars Racer Revenge. It seems a rare, limited-edition version of the game’s disc is connected to the problem, though the technical details are quite complicated.
Has PS5 Been Jailbroken?
On January 2nd, reports began appearing online indicating a serious problem for Sony. These reports claimed that the PS5’s security keys had been leaked, which could create a significant and permanent security risk for the company. As The Cybersec Guru explained in a recent article:
Okay, so near the end of 2025, things got crazy. News started spreading everywhere online that the PlayStation 5’s ROM Keys – basically, the most secure part of the whole system – had been leaked. It’s a huge deal, because those keys are what protect the console at its core.
This isn’t a software flaw that can be fixed with an update. It’s a fundamental security issue built into the hardware itself, and it’s already being exploited.
A recent leak reportedly revealed the core system code, called the BootROM, for the standard PlayStation 5 (the version that uses discs). According to security expert The Cybersec Guru, having access to this code is like having complete control over the console’s hardware.
The leak quickly gained attention online, with prominent figures in the console modding and jailbreaking community confirming its details. One user, Gezine, offered some technical background about what was happening.
This is a tool built on the game data from CUSA03474, and it’s related to the previously hinted-at method for duplicating data. The code will be released after some final refinements. Happy New Year to the gaming community!

While the leaked PS5 ROMs don’t automatically mean jailbroken consoles will appear immediately – there are still other security measures to overcome – this leak definitely makes it easier for jailbreaking to happen in the future.
As of today, the allegedly stolen code and data haven’t been found on any public websites, and Sony and PlayStation haven’t made any official statements about the situation.
