The PlayStation 5 is approaching its five-year mark, putting it past the midpoint of its typical lifespan. Considering the PS3 and PS4 were both popular for about seven years, the PS5 is already more than halfway through its expected time on the market.
Talk about the PlayStation 6 is starting to surface, with some reports hinting it might have features like the Nintendo Switch, allowing for mobile gaming.
Developers are starting to reveal games planned for the new console, including *Physint* from Kojima Productions, which is currently slated for release in either 2030 or 2031.
Okay, so for a long time, everything about the PS6 – what it would be made of, how powerful it’d be – was just guesses. But today, Sony and AMD finally dropped some news! They announced a new project called ‘Project Amethyst‘ which is all about making the next generation of gaming processors, so things are starting to get real!

AMD and Sony recently revealed their joint project, codenamed ‘Amethyst,’ in a new video. Jack Huynh, a senior executive at AMD, spoke with Mark Cerny, the lead architect behind the PlayStation Vita, PS4, and PS5, to announce the collaboration and share their vision for the future of gaming.
Project Amethyst is a collaboration between Sony and AMD to develop advanced machine learning technology. This technology is intended for use in future PlayStation consoles, promising improvements to gaming experiences.
Although the PlayStation 6 isn’t named directly, Mark Cerny mentioned that the new technologies discussed are currently only in the simulation phase. However, he expressed optimism about their potential and indicated they could appear on a future console within a few years.

The new technologies Cerny refers to include:
- Neural Arrays: groups of GPU compute units working together to share and process data similar to an AI, to allow for greater rendering and scalability
- Radiance Core: new hardware blocks that handle ray and path tracing in real time, allowing for increased light performance and an overall more efficient rendering process
- Universal Compression: a new system that evaluates all data headed to memory and compresses it when available, only sending out essential bytes, to allow the GPU to deliver more detail and higher frame rates.
Although these technologies are currently being tested, Huynh and Cerny are eager to share them with game developers. They believe the PlayStation 6 could potentially launch around late 2027, following the typical seven-year release cycle between PlayStation generations.
