As a seasoned gamer with decades of PlayStation gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that the prospect of a revived “PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale” is music to my ears. The original game, while not reaching its full potential back in 2012, had the makings of an exceptional platform fighter, especially with its diverse roster from beloved PlayStation franchises like Uncharted and God of War.
Since the initial release of the PS1, exclusive first-party IP has been a significant cornerstone of the PlayStation‘s brand identity. Iconic characters from games like Spyro the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot represented Sony’s first console for years to come. This strong attachment to exclusive PlayStation IP persisted throughout the 2000s, with series such as Uncharted, God of War, and LittleBigPlanet becoming inseparable from the PS3. Fast-forwarding a decade, this fondness for exclusive first-party IP has grown significantly stronger, with hit games like The Last of Us, Horizon, God of War, and Marvel’s Spider-Man serving as the main draw for Sony’s gaming consoles.
PlayStation boasts numerous IPs waiting in the wings for their chance to shine, yet there are some hidden gems from Sony’s past that deserve another opportunity. One such game is PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, which didn’t meet its potential when it was released in 2012, but could do well if given another chance today.
A New PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale Could Kill Two Birds With One Stone
A PlayStation All-Stars Sequel Would Have Plenty of New Icons To Choose From
This game, known as “PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale“, centers around a unique feature: constructing a powerful attack gauge to knock opponents off the battlefield. At its release, this game boasted an intriguing lineup of 20 characters. Notably, many of these initial fighters hailed from popular first-party PlayStation series such as Nathan Drake from “Uncharted“, Kratos from “God of War“, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, and Sackboy from “LittleBigPlanet“.
Additionally, the list of characters in this roster included some who hail from third-party games, such as BioShock’s Big Daddy, DMC’s Dante, Metal Gear Solid’s Raiden, and Tekken’s Heihachi Mishima. While these characters performed admirably and are renowned figures in the gaming world, they aren’t exclusive mascots for PlayStation. This was also true for the downloadable content of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, which featured Dead Space’s Isaac Clarke as well.
In other words, although a crossover fighter doesn’t necessarily require characters exclusive to its platform to thrive, it could have boosted the strength of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale if it had been populated primarily with well-known first-party characters. This would be more achievable for a new All-Stars Battle Royale, given the abundance of new first-party characters that could potentially join the game.
Ever since the launch of “PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale” in 2012, an impressive array of new faces have joined the PlayStation roster. Characters like Aloy from “Horizon”, Jin Sakai from “Ghost of Tsushima”, Ellie and Joel from “The Last of Us”, Spider-Man duo Peter Parker and Miles Morales from “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2” would make excellent additions to a potential new installment of the game. This barely scratches the surface, as games such as “Bloodborne”, “Returnal”, “Astro Bot”, and even the “God of War” Norse saga all boast their own casts of adored characters, potentially enriching the game’s roster further.
The Platform Fighter Genre Could Use A Game Like PlayStation All-Stars Now
The genre of platform fighters boasts several terrific games, including Brawlhalla, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2, and Rivals of Aether. However, it seems the iconic series that has shaped this genre might be taking a brief hiatus. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, though still incredibly popular, is nearly six years old, and there’s no news yet about when fans can expect another installment in this groundbreaking franchise. If developed promptly, a new PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale game could potentially step in to fill the gap.
