PlayStation Co-CEO Open To Bringing Back Classic Franchises

As a lifelong PlayStation enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of gaming since the days of analog joysticks and pixelated graphics, it’s heartening to see Herman Hulst’s open-minded approach towards reviving classic PlayStation franchises. The nostalgia trip that Astro Bot provided was just a glimpse into what could be possible if we revisit our beloved series from the past.

Upon its release in September, Astro Bot was warmly received by players due to its homage to Sony and PlayStation’s rich gaming history. The game paid tribute not only to more contemporary series like Horizon and Uncharted, but also to classic favorites such as Ape Escape. This nostalgic element has sparked speculation about whether PlayStation might revisit its library of timeless franchises for future projects.

As I sit down to share my thoughts with you all, let me tell you this – during a recent chat with Famitsu, the folks at PlayStation had me pondering about some classic series from our past. And So, gamers, keep your fingers crossed and your eyes peeled – who knows what surprises we might have up our sleeves!

Hulst stated that the many intellectual properties (IPs) we possess are valuable resources for PlayStation. To enhance our collection, we’re always exploring chances to utilize previously owned IPs and simultaneously creating fresh franchises.

Hulst emphasized that the company’s objective is to launch games developed by top-tier creators, regardless if they belong to PlayStation Studios or not. He also acknowledged and appreciated external studios for their numerous accomplishments thus far.

The idea of reviving past franchises has picked up steam across the games industry over the years. Currently, fellow Japanese company Sega is in the middle of a massive revival of classic games like Golden Axe, Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, and more.

It’s yet unclear if PlayStation will re-release classic games in the future, but it’s certainly pleasing for long-term enthusiasts to know that the possibility remains open, especially when the right circumstances arise.
