As a long-time gamer with a limited budget, I can’t help but feel frustrated and disappointed by the recent surge in video game prices, particularly for those of us living in countries like Turkey where the median salary is relatively low. I’ve always looked forward to new releases, but now, the prices are becoming unaffordable, leaving me feeling excluded from the gaming community.
The price tag on video games has been quite high, so it’s disappointing to learn that our favorite games may become even pricier. With industry developments come changes in subscription fees, such as the recent increase for Xbox Game Pass. Although PlayStation raised its subscription service costs last year for its multi-tiered plan, gaming expenses continue to fluctuate without any clear pattern of stability.
Despite Jim Ryan, the ex-CEO of PlayStation explaining the reason for a 20% hike in 2020 as being due to gamers spending more hours engrossed in new video games than any other form of media, one particular nation is infuriated over the price rise given its median income of $400.
According to Ameer, a Twitter user and video game media executive, gaming titles in Turkey have recently increased in price from approximately $60 (2,000 Turkish liras) to around $85. This surge comes after prices have risen globally. However, the concern is that Turkey’s median salary is only about $400 per month, making these higher game prices a significant financial burden for many residents.
Ameer strongly criticizes Sony’s prices for their games, going so far as to call them “unjustifiable” or even “unfair.” He argues that many gamers in Turkey will be unable to play future titles or will face significant financial hardships due to these costs. In a nation where the median income hovers around $400, Ameer is left bewildered and unable to continue purchasing games for the PS5 due to this price hike. Instead, gaming on a PC offers a more cost-effective alternative.
Ameer isn’t alone in expressing disappointment and anger towards Sony’s apparent insensitivity and greed, as other PlayStation fans have joined in the backlash. One comment read, “It’s disappointing that a company with such massive profits doesn’t seem to care about its loyal customer base and those affected by unfavorable exchange rates. Yet they continue to act defensively instead.”
As a Turkish resident, I’m left pondering: why would Sony assume it’s fair to sell games here for €80, given we have equal prices yet significantly lower earnings? In contrast, Microsoft keeps Game Pass affordable for us in Turkey despite their recent price increase.
I hope Sony will address the pricing problem with their PlayStations in Turkey as soon as possible, so that people don’t have to be denied the joy of playing beloved game series due to greed and a lack of comprehension.
