As a long-time PlayStation gamer with countless hours spent on various titles, I must admit my disappointment and frustration towards the recent issues plaguing the PS Stars loyalty program. It seems like every time I log into my account, there’s another controversy or flaw that leaves me shaking my head in disbelief.

PlayStation gamers express disappointment over a significant issue found in the PS Stars rewards system. Introduced last year, this program enables PlayStation users to collect points by buying games and finishing unique tasks, which can later be exchanged for digital collectibles, certain games, or PlayStation Store vouchers. However, it appears that there’s a minor problem with the challenge section of the system that has left the gaming community displeased.

PS Stars, distinct from Sony’s popular PlayStation Plus, is cherished by gamers due to its feature that lets users acquire PlayStation Store credits at no extra charge. However, it has been embroiled in controversy on numerous occasions since its debut in 2022. The initial controversy surfaced in June when the service inexplicably shut down for several weeks without any communication or compensation provided to users, which left some gamers frustrated.

PlayStation Users Aren’t Happy With PS Stars Challenges

In a new post on the PlayStation Stars subreddit, user Superchronicultra has pointed out a big flaw with the program. The post, which can be viewed below, includes a screenshot of the Stars section of the PlayStation App with a challenge offering players 200 points to purchase Gran Turismo 7, The Last of Us Part I, and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy. The problem is, that players who already own these games are unable to complete the challenge and earn the points, which some users believe isn’t very fair.

It seems the choice not to give rewards to players who’ve previously bought these games is causing disagreement among users. For instance, General-Football-512 suggests that owning the games digitally should be enough for recognition, whereas Fmg467 points out that PlayStation Stars might encourage excessive spending. It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time Sony’s loyalty program has left players feeling let down. Back in August, PlayStation Stars unveiled changes to their terms of service which included reducing the validity period of points from 24 months to 12 months and discontinuing the ability for users to earn points from PS Plus subscriptions starting from March 1, 2025.

Users find PS Stars appealing due to redeeming their points for PlayStation Store vouchers. However, in October, Sony unexpectedly took away the store credit option from PS Stars, leaving fans puzzled. Many criticized the company for this move, with some threatening to stop using the service altogether. Fortunately, the store credit option returned after a few weeks, but it now seems that only one $5 reward is available.
