Over the past few months, digital marketplaces on every gaming platform have been flooded with a large number of AI-created games, cheaply made games, and imitation titles. Many of these games that get listed are subpar at best, featuring repetitive assets, simple mechanics, and predictable content.
A recent examination by IGN focused on the effectiveness of quality control measures for gaming stores like PlayStation and Nintendo, particularly highlighting some issues with ‘spam games’ being removed quietly from the PS5 store in the last few days.
Are we about to witness a mass exodus of shovelware games from our digital stores?
Churn Them Out
Years back, users of PlayStation were expressing concerns over a surge of low-quality, mass-produced games on the digital marketplaces associated with their platform. This issue has been simmering for some time, but it reached a critical point following an investigation led by IGN. It appears that quality assurance procedures have been lax, allowing numerous developers to churn out and distribute AI-generated or asset-flipped games en masse.
Users of both PS4 and PS5 have pointed out a significant increase in low-quality, mass-produced games appearing in their search results, with certain developers being identified as the main offenders.
For example, RandomSpin Games, known for frequently releasing low-quality, largely inconsequential games, is also called Breakthrough Gaming. At its peak, this developer was churning out two to three RPG titles a month. Similarly, in the past five to six weeks, Zakym has discharged approximately a dozen games, and given their previous work, it’s reasonable to assume that they are all of poor quality.
Eurogamer pointed out today that numerous games from RandomSpin Games, a notorious offender on PlayStation, have been taken down from the digital library (DL). The reason behind this removal remains unclear, but it may be connected to IGN’s investigation, as PlayStation store operators are becoming increasingly vigilant against such misleading tactics.
How might they address the issue of counterfeit games cropping up, such as the fraudulent Black Myth game and the unauthorized version of The Last of Us for the Nintendo Switch?
