Pluton: One Piece’s Giant Whale Secret?

This article contains spoilers from One Piece’s Elbaf arc.

Summary

  • Ancient Weapon Pluton introduced in Arabasta arc by Crocodile.
  • Pluton may be a whale, hinted at as living creature, not just a ship.
  • Pluton’s purpose could be to destroy Red Line and create All Blue.

In the epic saga of “One Piece”, the enigmatic Ancient Weapons play a pivotal role in the upcoming Final Saga. Not long ago, the Ancient Weapon Uranus was witnessed annihilating the kingdom of Lulucia. As many fans are aware, Poseidon has already been unveiled as Shirahoshi. This leaves only Pluton, which, though it was the first of the Ancient Weapons to be introduced, still shrouds itself in mystery.

In the popular series One Piece, the hidden secrets of the First and Second Worlds unveiled through Elbaf have sparked intense fan discussions, with the ancient weapon Pluton taking center stage once more. While theories about its true nature abound, recent hints and those from the past suggest that Pluton might actually be a colossal whale.

How Pluton Is Described In The Story Of One Piece

  • The Ancient Weapon Pluton Was Introduced In Chapter 192
  • Crocodile Sought Pluton To Further His Own Goals

In various storylines of One Piece, the ancient artifact known as Pluton has been a significant player, even though it hasn’t fully appeared yet. The first hint about Pluton surfaced during the arc set in Arabasta, where Crocodile sought to possess it. As Crocodile described, Pluton was a colossal vessel slumbering within the kingdom of Arabasta. He also spoke of Pluton’s legendary power, asserting that a single blast from the weapon could disintegrate an entire realm. Fortunately, Nico Robin withheld the location of Pluton from Crocodile, and following his loss to Luffy, he was taken into custody.

Deep within the core of the planet, flames blazed. Humankind yielded to covetousness and sought the unattainable solar orb. The oppressed pleaded, and a Solar Deity emerged. The Terrestrial Deity grew enraged, summoning its Serpent of Infernal Fire, casting a pall over the world with death and darkness. And their paths shall never cross — “The First World

During the Water 7 storyline in One Piece, the Pluton resurfaced as a significant factor. It turned out that Franky, one of the main characters from Water 7, had the blueprints for this powerful weapon. These blueprints were inherited from the shipbuilders of Water 7, with Tom being a specific recipient. The revelation also showed that the Pluton was constructed on Water 7 in the past, emphasizing its connection to the shipwrights and their importance.

Fortunately, during the Enies Lobby Arc, Franky destroyed the blueprints for the Pluton, making it impossible to construct the weapon again unless Franky remembers the design. In the Wano Country arc, we learned at its conclusion that the Ancient Weapon Pluton lies within the Kingdom. The story suggests that awakening Wano’s borders means demolishing the country’s walls and releasing the Ancient Weapon, which would unleash it from its slumber. So far, the narrative has only provided this information about the Ancient Weapon Pluton, but there are several clues scattered throughout suggesting a deeper understanding of what this weapon entails.

Why Pluton May Be A Giant Whale

Pluton Could Be Very Different From What Fans Expect

Initially, the notion that Pluton, an Ancient Weapon in One Piece, is a whale may appear preposterous, but upon closer examination, it holds merit. Here’s a key point for fans: not all Ancient Weapons in this series are actual weapons. For example, Shirahoshi is a mermaid. Although Uranus has yet to be seen, it, along with Pluton, could also represent living beings rather than conventional weapons. However, given their status as Ancient Weapons, there must be some technological aspect involved, hinting at an underlying engineering behind these artifacts. For instance, Uranus was activated by a fragment of the Mother Flame taken from Vegapunk and handed over to the World Government. In a similar vein, it’s plausible that the Mother Flame could be used to activate Pluton in some manner.

Independent of any specific definition, it’s clear that if Pluton functions like a ship, it could symbolically be compared to a whale. For instance, consider Laboon from the novel “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.” Although Laboon is indeed a real whale, he was intricately crafted on the inside by Crocus, complete with tunnels, a house, and even an ocean within him. This internal mechanical complexity demonstrates that it’s feasible to construct a battleship using a whale as the foundation.

Interestingly, Oda frequently gives Pluton a human-like character within the narrative. On their initial inspection of the blueprints, Franky and Iceberg referred to Pluton as “a fearsome creature.

Is it even possible to build a beast like this? — Franky

In the same vein, during the Wano arc, Pluton was described as being “asleep” beneath the land of Wano. If Pluton were just a typical battleship, being submerged would’ve meant it was no longer operational. However, shattering the walls of Wano would undeniably awaken Pluton, as suggested by Sukiyaki.

Beyond all these observations, there’s a strong possibility that Eiichiro Oda may have subtly suggested that Pluton is actually a whale character. For example, a character closely associated with Pluton is Franky, and during the Zou arc, he sports a hairstyle reminiscent of a whale. Interestingly, this is the same arc where the Giant Whale Tree is unveiled to fans by the Ancient Kingdom’s allies, which on the surface seems merely coincidental. However, the striking resemblance of the tree to a whale is too specific not to raise suspicions.

Pluton Could Have A Purpose, Just Like Laboon

If you find it surprising that Pluton is depicted as a whale, here’s a thought for One Piece fans: Remember Laboon, the whale who frequently hit its head against the Red Line? Maybe there’s more to this behavior than we initially thought. After all, many of the blue whales seen in the New World have similar scars on their heads. It seems these whales are repeatedly hitting the Red Line…as if they are striving for something significant or fulfilling a duty passed down through generations. What if this duty could be traced back to the Great War that took place during the Void Century? The connection between dreams and tearing down the Red Line is evident, but it’s important to note that whales alone couldn’t accomplish such a massive task—unless, of course, this whale is powered by solar energy or, in essence, is an Ancient Weapon. Could it be possible that the ultimate purpose of Ancient Weapon Pluton is to demolish the Red Line, liberate the world, and bring forth the All Blue?

In an even more intriguing twist, chapter 1138 of One Piece unveiled a mural depicting both the First World and the Second World. On the left side, Joy Boy is prominently seen leading his troops into combat. Remarkably, among these allies is a gigantic whale, apparently transporting not just one but two individuals. Given the context, it’s plausible that one of them could be Momonosuke.
