Pocketpair Responds to Nintendo Lawsuit Over Palworld

As a dedicated gamer with years of experience under my belt, I must say, it’s always a bittersweet moment when we see indie developers like Pocketpair facing legal battles. On one hand, it’s heartening to see Palworld, a game that has brought so much joy to millions, thriving in the gaming world. On the other, the threat of patent infringement lawsuits can be a daunting challenge for small studios.

In response to Nintendo‘s legal action alleging patent infringement on their hit game, Palworld, Pocketpair has issued an official statement.

Yesterday, a legal action was initiated against our company, alleging patent violation.

We’ve been informed about this lawsuit and plan to initiate the necessary legal actions, as well as conduct a thorough examination regarding the allegations of patent violations.

Currently, we don’t know exactly which patents we are alleged to have violated. No specifics about these accusations have been communicated to us yet.

Hailing from Tokyo, Pocketpair is a modest independent video game studio, dedicated to crafting enjoyable titles since its inception. Our mission has consistently revolved around the development of fun games, as we recognize their power to spread joy among gamers across the globe. This year, Palworld took us by surprise with its unexpected success, resonating positively not only with players but also with our team. The overwhelmingly positive feedback has motivated us to work tirelessly to enhance Palworld even further, aiming to create a game that our supporters can take pride in.

Regrettably, this legal issue demands a considerable amount of our time away from game development. Yet, we remain dedicated to our supporters, and strive to maintain an environment where independent game creators can thrive in their innovative endeavors.

We apologize to our fans and supporters for any worry or discomfort that this news has caused.

As always, thank you for your continued support of Palworld and Pocketpair.”

Launched in January 2024, the popular game Palworld achieved an impressive milestone by selling more than 25 million copies. It held the title of the second most played game on Steam until Black Myth: Wukong overtook it, moving Palworld into third place in Steam’s history.
