The Hoenn region is famous for its diverse environments and unpredictable weather, providing homes for a wide variety of Pokémon. But it’s the Pokémon themselves that really make Hoenn so popular, with many fan favorites calling it home. The final evolutions of the region’s starter Pokémon – Swampert, Sceptile, and Blaziken – are particularly well-loved. And Hoenn’s Legendary Pokémon, like the powerful Kyogre and the graceful Latios, are known for both their strength and stunning appearance.
Hoenn is known for its Water-type Pokémon because of its warm, wet climate and many ocean routes, but Fire-types are also present in the region. While some, like the cute starter Torchic, are hard to find, others, such as Torkoal, live in the mountains and are more common. No Trainer can forget Primal Groudon, though, as this powerful Pokémon has threatened Hoenn with destruction multiple times.
Torchic Is a Popular Fire-type Starter
Various Versions of May Have Their Own Torchic
Treecko and Mudkip are both endearing Pokémon, but Torchic is especially known for being cute. This Fire-type Pokémon is incredibly loyal and a bit clumsy. In the anime, May chooses Torchic as her first Pokémon. When she doesn’t use Torchic in battles at first, it becomes determined to improve and eventually evolves thanks to its strong will.
The trailer for Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire showcases a skilled Torchic that belongs to the game’s version of May. While initially shy and scared of water, this Torchic sticks close to its Trainer. During an encounter with other Pokémon in the forest, Torchic becomes frightened but bravely uses a strong Ember attack to drive them away. The trailer also shows Torchic evolving into Combusken and then Blaziken, remaining a devoted companion to May throughout its journey.
Castform Changes Type With the Weather
When It Is Sunny Out, Castform Becomes a Fire-type
Castform is a rare, man-made Pokémon primarily found in the Alola region, but only when it’s raining. If you’re trying to find one elsewhere, like in Hoenn, you’ll need a bit of luck – either by encountering it in grassy areas (like those in Sinnoh or Unova) or receiving it as a gift. What makes Castform special is its ability to change its type based on the weather. When it’s cold, it becomes an Ice-type called Snowy Form. And when it rains, it transforms into Rainy Form and becomes a Water-type.
Castform needs bright, sunny weather to transform into its Fire-type Sunny Form. This Castform, along with its other forms and normal state, was introduced with Bart, the manager of the Weather Institute. This particular Castform had an important job: protecting valuable data from being stolen, even fending off a member of Team Magma who tried to take it. In battle, it loves to use the move Weather Ball, which becomes a strong Fire-type attack when Castform is in its Sunny Form.
May’s Starter Becomes More Powerful as a Combusken
Combusken Could Use Overheat and Sky Uppercut
May’s Torchic wasn’t a very strong battler at first, but it quickly improved after evolving into Combusken. As a Fire and Fighting-type Pokémon, Combusken was much more effective against Rock-types, though it still needed to be careful when facing Ground and Water-types. Along with its new type advantages and disadvantages, Combusken also matured, becoming calmer and losing its childish behavior. It learned a variety of powerful moves, including Sky Uppercut, Overheat, and Fire Spin, making it a formidable opponent.
May’s Combusken started battling more frequently as she worked to become a better Pokémon Coordinator and impress others. Although Fire Spin was tricky at first, it became a powerful move that helped May succeed in Contests. Just like May, Combusken was determined and never gave up, even when competitors tried to stop them. They even made it to the Kanto Grand Festival together, where Combusken evolved into its final form.
Torkoal Is One of Ash’s Most Loyal Hoenn Pokémon
This Pokémon Is Hard To Defeat Due to Its Shell
Before meeting Ash, Torkoal had a difficult life in the Valley of Steel, a place filled with strong Steel-type Pokémon. A particularly mean Steelix often picked on Torkoal. When Ash found Torkoal, he remembered the moves used by Flannery’s Torkoal and had it use Overheat. This helped Torkoal stand up to its bullies and win, leading it to happily join Ash’s Pokémon team for his journey through Hoenn.
Torkoal, the Coal Pokémon, is known for being very sensitive and expressive. When happy, it cries tears of joy and even puffs out smoke! Despite this, it’s a kind and friendly Pokémon who enjoys the company of both people and other Pokémon. Torkoal was a dedicated member of Ash’s team, often helping him win battles and competitions. While its attacks were effective against many opponents, its strongest feature was its incredibly durable shell, which even allowed it to stand up to Legendary Pokémon.

A Wise Trainer Knows to Never Anger a Camerupt
Mega Camerupt Is Especially Known for Its Hotheadedness
Numel, a Fire and Ground-type Pokémon found in the Hoenn region, is known for being a bit clueless and slow-witted, similar to Pokémon like Slowpoke. But when Numel evolves into Camerupt, it loses its goofy personality and becomes much more easily angered. Camerupt is famous for the two small volcanoes on its back, which actually erupt when it gets upset. Because Camerupt is quick to anger, especially in its Mega Evolved form, it’s important to approach with caution.
Ash and Pikachu quickly discovered how easily angered Camerupt could be when battling Vicky Winstrate’s Pokémon. After Pikachu’s Iron Tail hit Camerupt in the nose, the Fire and Ground-type Pokémon became furious and repeatedly used its powerful Eruption attack. Luckily, Vito, Vicky’s grandson, used his Alakazam to create rain with Rain Dance, which put out the fire and calmed Camerupt down. It could have been much worse, though – if Vicky’s Camerupt could have Mega Evolved, its volcanoes would have combined, making it even more dangerous.
Blaziken Is the First Known Fire/Fighting-type Starter
Mega Blaziken Is a Very Hard Pokémon To Knock Out
I’m a huge Pokémon fan, and Blaziken will always hold a special place in my heart! It was the very first Fire/Fighting type Pokémon to reach its final evolution, and it really set the stage for others like Infernape and Emboar. What I love about Blaziken is how incredibly fast and powerful it is – seriously, those legs and punches are amazing! The Pokédex even says it can jump over buildings with no problem, which is just awesome to imagine!
Similar to Sceptile and Swampert, Blaziken can Mega Evolve when holding a Blazikenite. When it does, its Ability changes to Speed Boost, which makes it faster with each turn, up to its maximum speed. This, combined with its diverse range of moves and increased stats, makes Mega Blaziken a particularly challenging Pokémon to face in battle.
Primal Groudon Can Nullify Water-Type Attacks
The Continent Pokémon Gains the Fire-Type Thanks To Primal Reversion
Groudon is one of the three most powerful Legendary Pokémon in the Hoenn region, alongside Kyogre and Rayquaza. Known as the Continent Pokémon, Groudon is believed to be the very spirit of the earth. While typically a Ground-type Pokémon, ancient Groudon was also a Fire-type, with the ability to cancel out Water-type attacks. Through a process called Primal Reversion, Groudon can revert to its original, more powerful form—Primal Groudon—and regain its Fire typing.
Long ago, the incredibly powerful Pokémon Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre clashed in a battle that almost destroyed the Hoenn region. Luckily, the ancient Pokémon Rayquaza intervened and stopped them. As seen in trailers and animations for Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, Team Magma accidentally revives Primal Groudon. With its ability, Desolate Land, causing intense heat and drying up all the water, it’s up to the heroes of Hoenn to calm the enraged beast before it destroys everything.
