After the original Kanto region, Generation II expanded the Pokémon world with the Johto region. Johto is a large area famous for its ties to many Legendary Pokémon, and it marked the first time each game in a generation had its own Legendary mascot. One of these mascots, Ho-Oh, is a Fire-type Pokémon, but it’s far from the only powerful Fire-type in Johto. The region is home to many other Fire-type Pokémon, like Slugma, which lives in the mountains, and the elusive Houndour.

Ash’s journey through the Johto region is a fan favorite in the anime. During his travels, he makes friends with many Fire-type Pokémon, including Cyndaquil, his starting Pokémon. Magby is a baby Pokémon that eventually evolves into the strong Fire-type, Magmar. A Trainer named Satchel had a particularly powerful Magby, and his goal was to help it evolve. Misty steps in to offer some helpful battle advice, and soon after, Egan finally catches Magcargo. The newly caught Pokémon quickly proves its worth by helping Egan when Team Rocket causes trouble.

The Steel and Dark types were first added in the second generation of Pokémon games. Dark-type Pokémon are often associated with battling and cleverness, like Incineroar and Mawile. For example, while Houndoom, a fast Dark/Fire type, is known for its powerful Fire-type moves, it can also be a noble Pokémon and even Mega Evolve.

In the Pokémon episode “Houndoom’s Special Delivery,” Harrison’s Houndoom plays a kind and helpful role. While working as a delivery Pokémon for its Trainer, Old Man Gon, Houndoom—called “Doomy” in the English version—finds Misty’s missing Togepi. Throughout the episode, Doomy looks after Togepi and even uses its power to keep it safe from other Pokémon. Team Rocket tries to capture Doomy, but it manages to drive them off with a strong Flamethrower attack.

The TV movie The Legend of Thunder! introduces Jimmy, the animated version of the character Ethan. He begins his adventure with friends Marina, a Trainer and Coordinator, and Vincent, another Trainer. By the start of the movie, Jimmy has already trained at least six Pokémon, including his fully evolved Typhlosion.

During a battle against Marina’s Feraligatr, Wani-Wani, Jimmy’s Typhlosion barely flinched from a Water Gun attack, demonstrating its incredible power. Jimmy and Typhlosion share a strong, loyal bond, much like Ash and Pikachu. When Team Rocket endangers the Legendary Pokémon Raikou, Typhlosion joins the rescue mission. Both Typhlosion and Jimmy happily say goodbye to Raikou once it’s safe.

Ho-Oh is a legendary Pokémon and one of the symbols of the Johto region, alongside Lugia and Suicune. As a Fire and Flying type, this stunning bird Pokémon is rarely seen, though stories tell of sightings after thunderstorms. One famous story links Ho-Oh to the destruction of the Brass Tower, which burned down during a powerful storm. When the fire was extinguished and the people mourned the Pokémon lost in the blaze, Ho-Oh miraculously revived them, transforming them into the legendary beasts we know today.

The Entei that Molly wished for was different from any other – it had incredible, unpredictable powers, even the Unown couldn’t fully grasp. Ash’s Charizard fought against this special Legendary Pokémon, but they stopped when Molly realized her mistake.
