Ever since the very first Pokemon cartoon aired, Ash Ketchum has been journeying across the Pokemon world. Along the way, he’s encountered many other Pokemon Trainers and their Pokemon companions. Some of these Trainers have even become his friends and traveled with him, sometimes to completely new places.
Throughout his adventures, Ash encountered many competing Trainers, each with unique ambitions and Pokémon teams. Sometimes, these rivals became friends, encouraging each other to improve. Other times, they simply inspired Ash to push himself further by achieving their own successes.
Kiawe Dreams of Becoming Kahuna
Kiawe and His Charizard Also Help With Deliveries
Kiawe appears in the Generation VII games as the Fire-type captain for Akala Island. To pass his trial, players battle strong Fire-type Pokémon at Wela Volcano Park, including Alolan Marowak and Totem Salazzle. Kiawe also helps the player by registering Charizard to their Ride Pager, enabling fast travel by flying. He’s a dedicated and enthusiastic person, both in battle and out, who loves sharing the traditional dances of the Alola region with his Pokémon companions.
In the anime, Kiawe’s personality is very similar to his portrayal in the games. However, instead of being a trial captain, he’s one of Ash’s classmates at the Pokémon School on Melemele Island. While he can be a bit distant and quick-tempered, Kiawe is a kind person who has a lot of respect for Pokémon and the powerful Z-Moves used in Alola. He’s also a skilled battler, already possessing a Z-Ring and knowing how to use it effectively. Beyond being a friendly rival to Ash, Kiawe previously traveled with him, and they often battle each other – but will also team up when needed.
Cameron Has an Energetic Spirit
Cameron Later Places Very Well in the Pokemon League
Cameron is one of Ash’s friendly competitors in the Unova region, and he’s almost always with his Pokémon partner, Lucario, who prefers staying outside its Poké Ball. They first appeared as a new face in the Pokémon League, with Lucario then being a Riolu that often mimicked Cameron’s behavior. Even Lucario, though, would get frustrated with Cameron’s tendency to forget things. Luckily, Cameron managed to register for the Vertress Conference on time, even though he only had five Pokémon instead of the usual six.
Cameron is a surprisingly strong competitor, even though he sometimes acts without thinking and struggles with Pokémon type advantages. His fortunes turned around when his Riolu evolved into Lucario and swiftly defeated Ash’s Snivy using Aura Sphere. The situation went from bad to worse for Ash when Cameron’s other Pokémon knocked out Pikachu. Beyond Lucario, Cameron boasts a powerful team with Pokémon like Samurott, Swanna, and Hydreigon.
Harrison Is an Intelligent Trainer From Littleroot Town
Harrison Inspires Ash To Visit Hoenn
Ash met Harrison, a Pokémon Trainer from the Hoenn region, before competing in the Silver Conference. Harrison, like many trainers from Littleroot Town, originally received his first Pokémon, a Torchic, from Professor Birch. By the time he reached Johto and befriended Ash, his Torchic had fully evolved, and he’d added Houndoom to his team – the two were almost always together. Similar to Brock, Harrison often acts as a guide and offers support to other trainers.

High Score: 0 —
Harrison is a skilled Pokémon Trainer who doesn’t boast about his abilities, but is known for his strategic battling. He has a strong team, including Pokémon like Steelix, Hypno, and a Sneasel he caught in Johto. His Blaziken and Houndoom are particularly powerful, thanks to their speed, strength, and effective Flamethrower attacks. While he lost to Jon Dickson at the Silver Conference, Harrison notably defeated Ash and motivated him to travel to the Hoenn region.
Trip Is a New Yet Talented Pokemon Trainer
Trip Was Able To Defeat Ash Just After Starting His Journey
When Ash reached the Unova region, a new trainer named Trip was just beginning his journey with his Pokémon, Snivy. Trip was motivated by the previous Unova Champion, Alder, and wanted to become a skilled trainer himself. He didn’t make a good first impression on Ash, as he looked down on trainers from the Kanto region. This dislike intensified when Snivy, new to battling, surprisingly beat Ash’s Pikachu in their first match.
Trip quickly became Ash’s biggest rival in the Unova region. Even after Ash started winning battles against him, Trip remained boastful and didn’t show Ash much respect. That changed at the Vertress Conference, where they had a crucial match. Trip had built a powerful team, including a strong Serperior that had evolved from his Snivy. However, Pikachu unexpectedly defeated Serperior, shocking Trip and finally making him see Ash as a worthy opponent.
Gladion Loves Intense Pokemon Battles
Gladion and Ash Do Not Always Get Along
Gladion is a popular Trainer from the Alola region, known for his role in the Generation VII Pokémon games. He was deeply disturbed to discover his mother, Lusamine, had created and mistreated an artificial Pokémon called Type: Null, which resembled the legendary Arceus. To protect Type: Null and escape his mother’s cruelty, Gladion took the Pokémon and ran away, joining Team Skull. After Lusamine was defeated, it was revealed that the strong bond between Gladion and Type: Null allowed it to evolve into Silvally, gaining the ability to change its type – a power similar to Arceus.
The animated series presents a different side of Lusamine, portraying her as a loving mother. Meanwhile, Faba, a minor villain in the video games, takes on the role of the primary antagonist in the Alola region. Gladion is depicted as being afraid of and determined to defeat Ultra Beasts to protect his sister, Lillie. He also becomes a key rival to Ash, with their contrasting personalities – Gladion being serious and Ash being more impulsive – often leading to arguments. However, they eventually gain respect for each other, and both manage to train strong Lycanroc, culminating in a battle at the Manalo Conference.
Sawyer Always Takes Notes on Battling
Sawyer Later Gains a Key Stone for Mega Evolution
Sawyer, a trainer originally from the Hoenn region, is eager to explore Kalos and other places with his Pokémon. When he began his journey in Kalos, all of his Pokémon – including Honedge, Bagon, and Treecko – were still in their first forms. Sawyer is a gracious competitor who learns from every loss, and he’s always taking notes in his notebook, whether he’s battling or watching Ash’s matches.
Sawyer quickly became a skilled Trainer thanks to his smart strategies. By the time he battled Ash at the Lumiose Conference, all of his original Pokémon had fully evolved, and he’d added even more to his team. He effectively used powerful Pokémon like Salamence, Aegislash, and Clawitzer, and his Sceptile had even Mega Evolved. Mega Sceptile was a formidable opponent for Ash-Greninja, but despite having a type advantage and the power of Mega Evolution, Sceptile was ultimately defeated after a hard-fought battle.
Paul and Ash Have Very Different Training Methods
Their Rivalry Reaches Its Climax in the Pokemon League
Ash is a cheerful and sociable Pokémon Trainer, but he sometimes clashes with people he meets during his adventures. One example is Paul, a Trainer from the Sinnoh region who is known for being calculating and distant. Paul is very driven to win and become the best, and he sees his Pokémon as a means to that end. If a Pokémon doesn’t perform well enough, he quickly releases it, as seen with his Chimchar, who he abandoned when it didn’t meet his standards.
I’ve noticed that Paul’s training style is incredibly demanding, but it seems to have worked for some of his Pokémon, like Electivire and Metagross, who became really strong. However, his methods eventually caught up with him when he battled Ash at the Lily of the Valley Conference. It was shocking to see how much his old Chimchar had grown – now a powerful Infernape, and under Ash’s care! The battle between Electivire and Infernape was explosive, easily the highlight of Ash’s time in Sinnoh. In the end, Infernape won, and it really made Paul question how he trained his Pokémon.
Alain Is a Mega Evolution Researcher
Alain Was Once a Pawn of Team Flare
Lysandre used to be a celebrated figure in Kalos, known for founding Lysandre Labs and inventing the Holo Caster. But his ambition to improve the world twisted into a disdain for most people, transforming him from a generous benefactor into someone who wanted to drastically reduce the global population. He manipulated Alain, Professor Sycamore’s assistant, by convincing him that the professor’s research on Mega Evolution would be misused. Believing he was protecting Professor Sycamore, Alain started working with Lysandre and became a skilled Trainer, renowned for his battles with Mega Charizard X.
Alain was driven by a strong need to protect his loved ones and a passion for understanding Mega Evolution, but this focus unintentionally pushed people away. When Lysandre and Team Flare threatened Lumiose City, Alain discovered he’d been manipulated and resolved to change. He joined forces with Ash and many other heroes to defeat Team Flare, ultimately bringing peace. Previously a strong competitor to Ash, Alain later faced him at the Lumiose Conference, where he emerged victorious as the champion. He and his Pokemon continued to compete in the Masters Eight Tournament, but were eventually defeated by Leon and his Charizard.
Gary Was Ash’s First Rival
Gary Has Since Become a Pokemon Researcher
Ash and his neighbor, Gary Oak, grew up together as close friends. Gary, the grandson of the well-known Professor Oak, quickly showed a knack for training Pokémon, becoming skilled at raising many different types. When they both became eligible to start their Pokémon journeys, Gary began teasing Ash, sparking a long-standing rivalry. Even as Ash improved, Gary stayed overconfident, but challenging battles eventually helped him become more humble.
The long-standing rivalry between Gary and Ash as Pokémon Trainers ended at the Silver Conference with a surprising victory: Ash’s Charizard defeated Gary’s strongest Pokémon, Blastoise. After the battle, Gary chose to pursue a career as a Pokémon Researcher, focusing his studies in regions outside of Kanto and Johto. Despite this change, as shown in Pokémon Journeys: The Series, Gary remains a skilled Trainer capable of winning tough battles. He even helps Ash’s friend, Goh, in Raid Battles against powerful Legendary Pokémon.
Ash Wished To Battle Leon in the Masters Eight Tournament
Their Fated Battle Proved To Be a Legendary One
Leon is the champion of the Galar region, well-known for his energetic battles and, surprisingly, his poor sense of direction. He’s a very loyal person, and for a long time, his closest friend was Sonia, as he often helped care for his family, including his younger brother, Hop. With Sonia’s encouragement and discovering a Charmander, Leon decided to pursue his dream of becoming a Trainer. He and Sonia eventually went their separate ways, particularly as Leon rose to fame thanks to his skill and the backing of Chairman Rose. When Leon met the renowned Trainer Ash, Ash declared his intention to challenge him, and Leon agreed, but only when Ash’s team was more prepared.
The long-standing rivalry between Leon and Ash came to a head at the Masters Eight Tournament, leaving them as the final two competitors. As expected, Leon relied on his powerful Charizard, using its Gigantamax transformation, while Ash battled with his trusted partner, Pikachu, and his last remaining Pokémon. The match was intense and hard-fought, but in the end, Ash managed to win.
