Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl: How to Get Chatot

As a seasoned Pokémon Trainer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Chatot is one of those creatures that, at first glance, may seem ordinary but possesses hidden depths and strategic potential. The immunity to Ghost and Ground-type moves is a game changer, especially when you’re facing Ghost- or Ground-heavy teams. However, as with any Pokémon, it’s essential to understand its unique abilities and limitations.

Flying-type Pokemon are useful at the start of anyone’s Pokemon journey, and in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, you’ll likely need one for the second gym. There are a handful of early-game Flying-type that you can catch, such as Starly, but then there are Pokemon such as Chatot. Like Starly, Chatot is a Normal/Flying-type. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to catch the Music Note Pokemon until you’re on your way to get the last gym badge. If you’re aiming to catch every Pokemon in the Sinnoh or National Pokedex, then you’ll eventually need to add Chatot to your PC Box. In Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, there are three ways to get Chatot without having to trade online.

Where to Find Chatot

Chatot Location

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl: How to Get Chatot

1. The elusive Chatot is found exclusively in natural habitats during daylight hours, so adjust your Nintendo Switch’s settings accordingly. You might find this creature on Routes 222 and 224 if you’re up for a hunt!

  • Route 222 is between Sunyshore City and Valor Lakefront. There’s a patch of grass on the left-side of Route 222 where you can find level 40/41 Chatot. Route 222 is inaccessible until after the events at Spear Pillar.
  • You won’t be able to get to Route 224 until you’ve received the National Dex from Professor Oak. To do this, you need to see all 150 Pokemon in the Sinnoh Dex. To reach Route 224, you’ll need to enter Victory Road (fly to the upper-half of the Pokemon League) and look for an exit on the right wall in the “main room”. Chatots on Route 224 are level 52/54.

You don’t have to collect every Pokemon from the Sinnoh Pokedex to obtain the National Pokedex. If you haven’t got a box-legendary (like Dialga or Palkia), head over to Celestic Town and chat with Cynthia’s grandmother. She’ll bring up either Palkia (in Brilliant Diamond) or Dialga (in Shining Pearl), which will then be added to your Sinnoh Pokedex.

How to Get Chatot Early

Trade in Eterna City

If you don’t have a Pokemon of Flying or Fire type for Eterna City gym, or if you wish to obtain Chatot earlier, then you can engage in a trade within Eterna City. Locate the structure situated next to the Poke Mart, and approach the youngster seated at a table on the ground floor. In return for a Buizel, this individual will exchange it for a Chatot.

Buizels can be caught on Route 205 and at the Valley Windworks.

When you obtain a Chatot through trading, it will come with a unique Trainer ID, different from your own. This special Chatot will gain twice as much experience in battles compared to regular Pokemon. Additionally, its name cannot be changed by you. Below are the stats of the Chatot found in Eterna City:

Name: Charap
Level: 15
Gender: Female
Nature: Lonely (+Attk, -Def)
Ability: Tangled Feet
Held Item: Leppa Berry
Moves:
  • Chatter
  • Sing
  • Peck
  • Growl

In Hearthome City, the berry that Charap is holding is called a Leppa Berry. This berry can be used to make Poffins. However, if left with Charap, it will automatically get consumed when the PP (Power Points) of one of Charap’s moves runs out. Each Leppa Berry restores 10PP.

More Information About Chatot

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl: How to Get Chatot

Chatot is a valuable Pokemon to obtain early in your journey through Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl, but its lower base statistics might make some trainers hesitant to use it during the end-game stages. However, its move set complements its dual typing quite effectively. If you plan on using Chatot, it’s crucial to understand its stats and strengths and weaknesses.

HP: 76
Attack: 65
Special Attack: 92
Defense: 45
Special Defense: 42
Speed: 91
Total: 411

Although none of Chatot’s base stats exceed 100, its speed at 91 and special attack at 92 make it a quick combatant, particularly as a special attacker. However, due to its poor Special Defense and Defense, which are very weak, you should avoid exposing it to Electric, Rock, and Ice-type attacks.

Due to its stat spread, recommended natures for Chatot include:

  • Timid (+Spd, -Attk)
  • Modest (+Sp. Attk, -Spd)
  • Hasty (+Spd, -Def)
  • Mild (+Sp. Attk, -Def)
  • Rash (+Sp. Attk, -Sp. Def)
Super-effective against: Grass, Bug
Weaknesses: Electric, Rock, Ice
Resistances: Grass, Bug
Immunities: Ghost, Ground

Chatot’s Normal-typing provides an immunity against Ghost and Ground attacks, but this protection fades away when the Mold Breaker Ability is activated or when the Gravity move is employed.

Keen Eye: Prevents accuracy from being lowered by other Pokemon.
Tangled Feet: Chatot’s evasiveness rises when it’s Confused.
Big Pecks: Prevents defense from being lowered by other Pokemon.
Recommended Moves
Power PP Accuracy Effect Level/TM
Chatter 65 20 100% Inflicts damage and confusion on the target. 21
Nasty Plot 20 Sharply raises the Special Attack stat. TM63
U-Turn 70 20 100% Damages the opponent, then returns to its trainer to swap places with another Pokemon. TM89
* Boomburst 140 10 100% Hits everything around the user. If used in double battles, it will also damage the ally Pokemon. Egg Move

In order for Chatot to learn Boomburst, you must breed a Pokemon from an earlier generation that already knew this move. This would require cross-breeding a male Noivern that had Boomburst with a female Chatot. The resulting offspring Chatot would inherit the Boomburst move. However, you can only perform this breeding in the games Pokemon X/Y. Afterward, you’d need to transfer the Egg or the hatched Chatot from Pokemon X/Y to Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl using Pokemon HOME and Pokemon Bank.
