The game Pokemon Champions was released yesterday, and even though the most effective strategies and top Pokemon will likely change over time, some clear favorites have already emerged. Currently, Mega Evolution is the main special mechanic in the game, so it’s not surprising that many of the strongest Pokemon are Mega Evolved. This is further emphasized by the fact that this version of the game is less powerful than usual VGC formats, as several items and Pokemon were removed. Unfortunately, the very best Mega Evolved Pokemon is only available through a purchase.
It’s common for competitive Pokemon players to use creatures from older games – we saw this a lot in Scarlet and Violet with Pokemon like Calyrex and Urshifu. This practice of needing to own previous games to access top-tier competitive Pokemon has become quietly accepted. Now, the same is happening with Pokemon Champions, and it’s particularly noticeable with Pokemon Legends: Z-A. This game is unique and doesn’t appeal to all players, and the issue centers around the exclusive Pokemon, Eternal Flower Floette and Mega Floette.
Pokemon Champions’ Best Mega Evolution is Already Clear, And You May Not Have It
Right now, you can’t find Mega Floette or its regular form in Pokemon Champions directly. It’s not available to recruit in the game. The only way to add it to your team is to transfer one from Pokemon Legends: Z-A using Pokemon Home, and then bring it into Pokemon Champions. However, there are a few issues with this process.
- Pokemon Legends: Z-A costs $70, meaning that if you don’t already have it, you have to spend money to first buy the game, and then play through it.
- Pokemon Legends: Z-A‘s battle style is something not everyone was happy with on launch, and it became pretty divisive over time as more updates and seasons came out.
- In order to get Eternal Flower Floette and its Mega form, you have to beat the entire campaign of Pokemon Legends: Z-A, then complete a few post-game missions, and then participate in the Infinite Z-A Royale until you get 20 Challenger’s Tickets. At that point, you can battle Taunie/Urbain again, and finally get Eternal Flower Floette and its Mega Stone. This can require anywhere from 35 to 60 hours, if not more, depending on the speed at which you complete everything.

It might not seem like a major issue because Mega Floette is powerful, but not overwhelmingly so. However, that’s not quite right. The Pokedex in Pokemon Champions doesn’t feature all the new Mega Evolutions from Z-A, and even the ones that are included haven’t really benefited from their updated abilities – most are just average or even weak. For instance, Mega Meowstic had the potential to be an excellent Psychic Terrain setter with the ability Psychic Surge, but it ended up with Trace, making it a less effective version of Mega Alakazam, which already wasn’t very strong.
Why Mega Floette is OP in Pokemon Champions
Mega Floette stands out because it actually received a strong ability when it Mega Evolved – Fairy Aura. This ability is famous as the signature move of Xerneas, a top-tier Legendary Pokémon. Fairy Aura boosts the power of all Fairy-type moves by 30%, and while it affects opponents’ Fairy moves as well, it primarily enhances Mega Floette’s already impressive 155 Special Attack, allowing it to deal massive damage.
In the lower-powered competitive scene of Pokemon Champions, where many strong Pokemon are absent and only one Mega Evolution is allowed per battle, Mega Floette stands out as the hardest hitter. It can knock out many common threats in a single hit, especially those that aren’t heavily defended. Even other Mega Evolutions like Mega Froslass, Mega Kangaskhan, and Mega Golurk are vulnerable to moves like Moonblast. Mega Floette’s unique move, Light of Ruin, boasts a massive 140 base power, allowing it to potentially defeat almost any Pokemon. While Light of Ruin isn’t perfectly reliable due to its 90% accuracy and recoil damage, the potential reward is significant.
Mega Floette is currently a top-performing Pokémon in competitive battles, despite not being widely used. The reason for this is simply that it’s difficult to obtain – you need to play through a significant portion of Pokémon Legends: Z-A and purchase the game itself, which requires both time and money. While incredibly powerful, unlocking Mega Floette demands a $70 investment and a considerable time commitment.
