This year on Pokemon Day, there were some thrilling announcements, despite fans not yet getting a peek at Generation 10. A new title called “Pokemon Champions” has been revealed for both mobile devices and the Nintendo Switch (possibly also the Nintendo Switch 2), but the teaser trailer doesn’t reveal much about gameplay, features, monetization, or other details. At first glance, “Pokemon Champions” appears similar to older games like the official but outdated “Pokemon Stadium” or even the unofficial “Pokemon Showdown.” If “Pokemon Champions” indeed turns out to be a dedicated battling game, it’s a fantastic new addition to the franchise. It breaks tradition by not being part of the mainline titles.
As a devoted fan, I’m always excited about the latest installments in the Pokémon series. Right now, each main game brings its unique combat feature: Gen 9 introduces Terastallization, while Gen 8 showcases Dynamaxing and Gigantamaxing. Unfortunately, I can’t use Dynamax or Gigantamax in Gen 9 because the only supported mechanic is Terastallization. But, the upcoming Pokémon Champions game seems to be breaking tradition by offering something new!
Pokemon Champions Will Allow Multiple Battle Gimmicks
In Pokemon games, using a unique combat mechanic for each game has its advantages. This strategy simplifies battles and makes them more accessible to all players, sets boundaries for specific rules within the game’s battles and competitive play, and gives each generation its own distinctive feel through dedicated gimmicks. For instance, Pokemon Champions could adopt an alternative approach to ranked and double battles, as it permits multiple generational gimmicks to be employed simultaneously, as demonstrated by Terastallization from Gen 9 and Mega Evolution from Gen 6 in the trailer.
It’s worth noting that not all Pokemon will be available in Pokemon Champions on launch.
Considering the enduring appeal of various battle tactics in Pokemon games, it’s logical for Pokemon Champions to provide all these gimmicks to players, allowing them to pick their favorites or those that best complement their team strategy. This move could significantly elevate competitive battling by introducing an element of surprise due to the unpredictable nature of the chosen battle gimmick your opponent might use, given the broad selection which spans the entire series. Moreover, the ability to switch between multiple gimmicks could attract both new players and veterans, encouraging them to explore the game and competitive battling in general.
Why Pokemon Champions Allowing Multi-Generational Battle Gimmicks Matters

In the new game, Pokemon Champions, since Dynamaxing and Terastallization have never been used simultaneously before, we might need to make adjustments to each feature to ensure fair play. For instance, Mega Evolutions could provide an overpowering advantage for specific Pokemon, Terastallization could introduce a surprising factor, while Dynamaxing could significantly enhance the threatening nature of certain creatures due to increased HP and stronger moves. As these mechanics haven’t been combined previously, except for Z-Moves and Megas in Gen 7 following the main storyline, it remains unclear how battles will unfold within Pokemon Champions.
A great deal remains unknown concerning the game titled Pokemon Champions, as its development may bring about changes over time. However, featuring both Pokemon‘s Mega Evolutions and Terastallization strongly suggests the game’s intended direction. Departing from the traditional single-feature approach could prove advantageous, potentially making both casual and competitive battles more enticing in the future.
