Enthusiasts delving into the trailer for Pokemon Champions have unearthed an intriguing detail – the game will feature move descriptions with precise percentages, a significant shift from previous versions of the series. Unlike other mainline games in the Pokemon universe, Pokemon Champions appears to be solely dedicated to competitive combat, which might explain why Game Freak has chosen to streamline and make the battling system more user-friendly.
The game titled “Pokemon Champions” was announced as a spin-off in February 2025 for Switch consoles and mobile devices. Since then, details about the game have been scarce. However, during the Pokemon Presents livestream on July 22, a new trailer showcasing actual gameplay footage was unveiled, disclosing mechanics that had not previously been announced, which grabbed the attention of fans.
In a recent Reddit post, user CreeperSlimePig pointed out an intriguing finding about the Pokemon Champions trailer. Instead of using general terms, the description for the move Expanding Force in the trailer specified the exact percentage increase in damage it provides, which is a first in any official Pokemon game. To give you an idea, the game entry for Expanding Force in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet simply states that “the move’s power is boosted,” but this statement does not clarify exactly how much this “boost” amounts to.
Pokemon Champions Will Have Detailed Move Descriptions
| Pokemon Champions | When Psychic Terrain is active, this move’s power is boosted by 50% and its range extends to all opponents. |
|---|---|
| Pokemon Scarlet & Violet | When the ground is Psychic Terrain, this move’s power is boosted and it damages all opposing Pokemon. |
It’s been noticed that Game Freak seems to be drawing inspiration from Pokemon Showdown, a highly popular fan game used by competitive battlers within the community. This game simplifies the terminology of Pokemon moves for players, making it clear what each move does, and it appears as though Champions is following suit in this regard.

It seems that some elements from the game “Showdown” could also be found in the upcoming official game, as suggested by the trailer for “Pokemon Champions”. This includes a percentage indicator alongside the HP bar, changes in EVs and IVs, and distinct messages for moves with 0.25x, 0.5x, 2x, and 4x effectiveness. While these features are present in “Showdown”, it appears that they might be implemented differently in “Champions”.
