Among the highlights from the presentation, aside from the release date for Pokemon Legends: Z-A, was the unveiling of Pokemon Champions – a brand-new spin-off in the Pokemon series specifically designed for Nintendo Switch and mobile devices. This game is being developed by Game Freak along with a newly formed company called The Pokemon Works. Although the reveal trailer didn’t show much gameplay, official blog posts about Pokemon Champions offer a clearer insight into what the game entails.

Essentially, Pokemon Champions is a combat-focused video game. It strips down the core fighting mechanics from the primary Pokemon series and leaves out everything else, such as exploration, side quests, or character interaction. Players can only engage in battles within this game. Although Pokémon Showdown isn’t an official product from The Pokémon Company, it’s widely used by the community due to its flexibility. Players can use any Pokémon they desire with custom setups, making experimentation a breeze compared to mainline Pokémon games. This freedom to tinker and innovate sets it apart in a compelling way.

Based on what’s been disclosed thus far, it appears that Pokemon Champions might be Game Freak’s anticipated response to Pokemon Showdown. Regrettably, the game seems to fall short in certain aspects where Pokemon Showdown thrives. One of the significant drawbacks of Pokemon Champions lies in its limited Pokemon roster at launch, as it won’t feature all 1,000+ Pokemon. Instead, only a select group of Pokemon will be available in the game. Players can move some of their Pokemon from Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, as well as Pokemon GO to Pokemon Champions, but not all Pokemon will appear in the game. This limitation poses a significant challenge since it restricts the range of strategies players can employ during battles.
