Pokemon Fan Art Imagines Convergent Poison-Type Psyduck and Golduck

A Pokémon enthusiast has created interesting new designs for Psyduck and Golduck, reimagining them as Poison-type Pokémon. These designs not only change their type but also put a unique spin on Psyduck’s well-known characteristics of being confused and suffering from headaches.

Over the past few years, the Pokémon series has introduced a fascinating concept called ‘convergent evolution.’ Inspired by real-world biology, this involves Pokémon that look alike but aren’t directly related. A great example is Wiglett and Diglett – both long, serpentine Pokémon, but Wiglett is a water-type eel while Diglett is a ground-type mole. Since not every Pokémon has a convergent counterpart, fans often create their own ideas for these similar, yet distinct, creatures.

Psyduck Fanart Introduces the Pokemon’s Poison-Type Convergent Line

A Pokémon fan named veredien29 came up with a fascinating idea for a new version of Psyduck. They reimagined it as a Water/Poison-type Pokémon called Sighduck. The design plays on the name Psyduck and depicts a sadder, more melancholic version of the Shiny Psyduck, using a blue color scheme with darker shading around its body and eyes. Instead of the usual three hairs on Psyduck’s head, this version has longer strands that hang over its face, giving it a gloomy appearance. The artist explained they wanted to create an evolution of Psyduck focused on sadness and dark feelings, rather than its typical confusion and psychic potential.

The artist has designed a new evolution for Sighduck called Greve. It evolves at level 32, but only if its friendship with the trainer is low. Unlike most Golduck, Greve has a unique look: it stands upright and has long hair flowing from its head down its back. Its coloring is also different, becoming darker with a purple hue, red eyes, and more noticeable feathers on its tail and wings. The artist drew inspiration for Greve’s design from the effects of oil spills on birds, giving it stained and drooping feathers and a generally affected appearance.

People online are really excited about the new Pokémon designs! One fan suggested a new ability called Despair for the Sighduck line, which would lower an opponent’s Special Attack – the artist behind the designs loved this idea. Others praised the name ‘Greve,’ noting it’s a clever combination of the word ‘grief’ and the name of a type of bird called a Grebe.

Despite Stagnancy, Psyduck Appreciation Carries On

Dedicated Pokémon players will remember that Psyduck hasn’t gotten many updates in the main games over the years. Since the very beginning of the series, both Psyduck and its evolved form, Golduck, have remained largely unchanged, without receiving any special new evolutions or forms.

Even though Psyduck hasn’t received many updates in recent games, it’s still a beloved character and something of a face for the Pokemon franchise. It’s appeared in major projects like the movie Pokemon: Detective Pikachu and the Netflix series Pokemon Concierge. Much of its popularity likely comes from the original Pokemon anime, where it was a funny character who sometimes unexpectedly used its psychic abilities to help out. The filmmakers behind Pokemon: Detective Pikachu specifically wanted Psyduck in the movie because they were fans, and Junichi Masuda, an original Pokemon developer, has even said it’s his favorite Pokemon.

It’s uncertain if Psyduck will ever receive a significant upgrade in the games, like a Mega Evolution, but it appears its popularity will continue.
