A Pokémon fan has created a new design for Arcanine that’s getting a lot of attention. Although Pokémon Legends: Z-A will feature around 70 Pokémon that can Mega Evolve, Arcanine isn’t one of them – and this fan’s design could be a popular addition to the game.
Arcanine is a strong Fire-type Pokémon with a history stretching back to the very first games. Because Fire-type Pokémon were rare in those early titles, Arcanine was a particularly valuable pick for players who chose Squirtle or Bulbasaur as their starter. Even today, its high Attack, Special Attack, and Speed stats make it a great choice for battling Grass, Steel, Ice-type Pokémon, and many others.
Pokemon Fan’s Mega Evolution for Arcanine
Although Arcanine is a classic Pokémon, it hasn’t been included in the Pokemon Legends: Z-A Pokedex yet. Other strong Fire-type Pokémon like Charizard, Emboar, Pyroar, Talonflame, and Camerupt are available instead. However, one fan has imagined what Arcanine could look like with a Mega Evolution, specifically for Pokemon Legends: Z-A. Reddit user HeroOfMadness created this design, keeping Arcanine’s iconic fluffy mane and tail but changing the color of its fur to a dark gray with orange highlights, resembling flowing magma. The design also features flames shaped like an ‘X’ across its chest, which would be a fitting addition to Pokemon Legends: Z-A, as the game is a sequel to Pokemon X and Y and takes place in the same Kalos region.
The artist designed this piece with inspiration from the Shisa, a traditional Okinawan dog-lion spirit that originally inspired the Pokémon Arcanine. The Shisa has appeared in several video games over the years – as a creature you can recruit in the Shin Megami Tensei and Persona series, and as a cultural element in games like Yakuza 3, which takes place in Okinawa. The artist also referenced information from the Pokémon Pokédex, like details about Arcanine storing fiery energy within its body, to explain the design of its Mega Evolved form’s charred appearance.
While not officially announced, a Mega Arcanine could still be added to the game. The upcoming Mega Dimension DLC launches on December 10th and will bring back 138 Pokémon, plus new story content and the ability to temporarily raise Pokémon levels above 100. Confirmed Mega Evolutions for the Pokémon Legends: Z-A DLC include Mega Raichu X and Y, Mega Chimecho, Mega Lucario Z, Mega Zeraora, and Mega Baxcalibur, and rumors suggest over a dozen more are coming.

Although Arcanine hasn’t received a new Mega Evolution in Pokemon Legends: Z-A, it did get a unique makeover in the previous game, Pokemon Legends: Arceus. This game introduced regional variants specific to the Hisui region, including a new form of Arcanine and its pre-evolution, Growlithe. These Hisuian Growlithe and Arcanine, found in the Cobalt Coastlands and Veilstone Cape, gain a Rock-type, adding extra defense to their abilities. The new Arcanine’s gray and orange coloring is reminiscent of a volcanic eruption, similar to a fan-made design for the Pokémon.
