The pixel art captures the squishy aesthetics of our beloved early Pokemon games perfectly. Another perspective is from the front, mimicking how Milotic might look if encountered in the wild or when facing another trainer. Although the pixel art isn’t an exact replica of Milotic, that’s the intention.
Gen 1 Pokemon Sprites are Notorious For Odd Qualities
1st generation Pokemon sprites are infamous for not accurately portraying how a Pokemon looks in other formats. While Pokemon Red and Green were particularly bad about this, the versions that most Western fans are familiar with still feature squashy sprites that attempt to represent the Pokemon in a dynamic manner given the limited space. Milotic’s sprite by Metalflygon08 captures these characteristics well, with its front view being primarily in profile, making it appear less graceful and slender compared to its modern version, and its tail fins resembling a peculiar hand-like structure. Despite this, one fan remarked that the sprite wasn’t as “unsettling” as the original Generation 1 sprites.
On more than one occasion, metalflygon08 has showcased what a modern Pokemon might appear like in a Generation 1 game. Most recently, they unveiled their reinterpretations of Teddiursa and Magmortar using the same design approach, which garnered positive feedback from fans. In this specific instance, it’s easy to picture Milotic as if it had been an original Generation 1 Pokemon. Its evolutionary line mirrors that of Magikarp, starting with the unattractive and feeble Feebas, then transforming into the graceful and elegant Milotic – much like how Magikarp begins weak and insignificant but eventually evolves into the powerful Gyarados.
