Pokemon Fan Designs Alternate Magikarp Forms Based on Other Water-Types

Key Takeaways

  • Fans show love for Magikarp through custom designs despite its low base stats.
  • A fan uses various Water-type Pokemon as inspiration for Magikarp variants in new artwork.

As a lifelong Pokemon enthusiast who can remember the excitement of catching my very first Magikarp back in the days of Red and Blue, I can wholeheartedly appreciate the creativity and love that goes into these fan-made designs. It’s fascinating to see how MunchyKu has taken inspiration from some of the most iconic Water-type Pokemon and given Magikarp a fresh twist!

Despite extended periods without fresh Pokemon title launches, the creative output of fans within the franchise remains abundant. A fan recently exhibited an impressive assortment of unique Magikarp designs, a character deeply admired in the realm of Pokemon, who, despite its popularity, has yet to be granted any official new forms, regional variants, or similar updates.

Among the initial 151 Pokemon introduced in the classic games “Pokemon Red” and “Pokemon Blue” from Generation 1, Magikarp has been a fan favorite since the series began. Despite its widespread recognition, Magikarp is surprisingly one of the least powerful Pokemon, boasting a base stat total of only 200. However, Magikarp can be found in many regions across the Pokemon universe, and it’s far from being completely useless; it quickly evolves into the formidable Gyarados.

Nearly every Pokemon enthusiast who’s delved into at least one game in the series is familiar with Magikarp’s situation, yet its weak combat skills don’t deter fans from adoring it. Interestingly, Magikarp often appears in fan-created artwork like this compilation of concepts that envision alternate forms for the Water Pokemon inspired by some of the other popular water creatures found within the series. This artistic work was produced and disseminated online by the fan called MunchyKu, featuring designs based on Gyarados, Milotic, Bruxish, Tentacruel, Lapras, Vaporeon, Wishiwashi, Empoleon, and even the legendary Pokemon Palkia.

These Magikarp Designs Take Inspiration From Nine Different Water Pokemon

Over the past few years, especially after the debut of regional variations in Generation 7 Pokemon games, we’ve seen numerous Pokemon, from mainstream to obscure ones, evolve into various new forms. The recently released Pokemon Scarlet and Violet took things a step further by introducing Paradox Pokemon and convergent Pokemon. These aren’t exactly regional variants, but they add fresh twists to existing Pokemon in unique and imaginative manners.

Since Generation 7, regional Pokemon variations have remained a favorite among fans, gaining even more affection following Pokemon Legends: Arceus, which showcased how this regional variant concept could provide a unique twist on classic regions like Sinnoh. Fans are eagerly waiting for any new tidbits about next year’s Pokemon Legends: Z-A, with many hoping to discover Kalosian regional variants. However, it’s not very probable that Magikarp will be one of them.
