Pokemon Emerald is highly praised for its extensive post-game content, and FireRed and LeafGreen were the first reimaginings of the original Pokemon games. Recently, a fan thought they were incredibly lucky to find these games, but it turned out to be a prank.

Pokemon Fan Gets Pranked With Classic Pokemon Christmas Gift

A Reddit user named BrestonTheBread shared a funny Christmas gift experience on the Pokemon subreddit. They received what appeared to be a copy of Pokemon Emerald, but when they put it in their DS, it turned out to be a prank! Instead of the game, the DS started playing a pixelated version of Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up.” It seems their dad intentionally swapped the game for a “Rick Roll” and even asked them to try it out so he could watch their reaction.

The post quickly gained a lot of amused responses from other Pokémon fans, and more details about the Christmas prank came to light. The person who originally shared the story explained that the Nintendo DS was a gift from their father, and the Pokémon Emerald cartridge was included as a joke. Other fans speculated where the prank cartridge came from, pointing out that shops like Etsy sometimes sell similar joke copies of older Game Boy Advance games. Many also noticed the cartridge’s appearance and correctly guessed it wasn’t a genuine copy, as fake versions of these games are well-known.
