Enthusiasts of the popular franchise, Pokemon, are still engaged in an ongoing discussion about which generation of the creature-combat Role Playing Game (RPG) boasted the finest initial group of characters. Over the years, nine mainline pairs of games have been released, along with several spin-offs featuring their own starting creatures. This wealth of options has resulted in more than 30 unique monsters that Pokemon fans can choose as companions to embark on their adventures. Consequently, a multitude of opinions about the best possible choices have emerged.
The initial Pokemon games were launched in Japan back in 1996, eventually reaching Western markets approximately two and a half years later. Among the beloved characters from the Kanto region – Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle – these remain among the franchise’s most cherished; however, they don’t hold the number one spot in the ongoing debate for the top starter trio.
According to Game Rant’s study of a popular Reddit discussion, the starters from Pokemon Generation 3 are overwhelmingly preferred in the game’s almost 30-year run. Out of numerous fan lists ranking their favorite trios, Gen 3 received the most favorable mentions (82 times) compared to other generations like Generation 1 (61 responses) and Generation 4 (59). Although some players may not appreciate Blaziken’s appearance, they generally acknowledge its raw power. The adaptability of Sceptile and Swampert’s robust Water and Ground defenses are significant factors contributing to their popularity among fans.
Pokemon’s Most Beloved Starter Generations Determined by Fans
- Gen 3 – Treecko, Torchic, and Mudkip
- Gen 1 – Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle
- Gen 4 – Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup
- Gen 7 – Rowlet. Litten, and Popplio
- Gen 2 – Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile
- Gen 9 – Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly
- Gen 6 – Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie
- Gen 5 – Snivy, Tepig, Oshawatt
- Gen 8 – Grookey, Scorbunny, Sobble
However, when discussing favorite generations, it appears that Generation 8 is the least favored among many Pokemon enthusiasts. Despite some positive conversations, more people have expressed negative opinions about Sobble, Grookey, and Scorbunny. Similarly, the Gen 5 starters – Oshawott, Snivy, and Tepig – continue to receive criticism from fans. However, it’s not entirely negative as the Hisuian variant of Samurott from Pokemon Legends: Arceus received some praise due to its Dark typing, with one fan stating that it was “what Samurott should have been from the beginning.” Interestingly, these two generations were also the least discussed.
In Pokemon Gold and Silver, the Johto starters (Totodile, Cyndaquil, and Chikorita) were not as popular compared to the starters from the early days of the franchise. Approximately a quarter of discussions about the best vs worst Pokemon involved the former group, with many players expressing dissatisfaction over the single types that their final evolutions have. However, Squirtle managed to escape most criticism due to a strong sentiment of nostalgia among fans.
